Hey, i have been fighting the urge to buy a cannon 500d from the refurb page on the bay.

Is this a good camera to learn with? My uses will be varied, want a general all rounder which feels solid.

I was originally looking at the 1100d but to me they feel a little cheap, cant say I've had a 500d in my hands though (shops round me only stock the 550d).

Any other cameras i could be looking for a similar price (£329 with 18-55 IS Lens). Would the 500d be happy enough being pointed at the night sky and get decent'ish shots of the stars for example.

The 1100d is pretty decent to be fair to it. Doesn't cost much more new either. You'll want a decent tripod for night shots too, and a remote release as well if you want to do star trail stuff.

Just to throw another one into the mix i saw a nikon d3100 in a local shop today (2nd hand) for £395 with a vr lens. Does that sound good? would i be better off with that opposed to an older 500d. What sort of shutter count would you guys expect for something like that.

You used to get them brand new for that price. It's a good camera, but I couldn't pay that much 2nd hand knowing they were cheaper new a few months ago.

Yeah since i posted that ive had a quick look can see them about £20 dearer brand new! Maybe i'll see if i can offer the shop £300 and see what they say hah
