Am I doing the right thing? Trade in question.

Its not going to be 9k if you ditch the 1 series, and why do you have to wait 5 years, keep the Porsche till you cant warranty it.

Anyway that Porsche will still be going in 20 years never mind 5, your driving yourself mad for nothing.

Live the life mate, your dads caked, your on the way to being caked, this is why you knock yourself out so if an engine blows up, well yea it hurts, but not much in the bigger picture.

Your logic is sound, in fact its the very same thought I've been having. While I'm in school however I'm no longer earning, therefore what I have is what I have and I'm looking for something that's going to get me to the end of the school road so to speak. My heart wants to keep the 911 and run it into the ground but my head's telling me that I'll regret that choice a couple of years down the road and by which point I wont be in the situation I'm in now to just drop $70k on a new M3.

But that Porsche is going to get you to the end of school no problem, and you have whatever you get for the 1 series and what you dont spend on the M3 in the bank.

And **** it be honest if push comes to shove you accept one of those offers im quite sure you regularly get off your dad of a few quid.

Your in a great position, enjoy it, thats what its all about.

You know what i'd buy if i was living there? The biggest **** off Hummer i could find, then supercharge it, then park that thing where i wanted :D

I wouldnt go for the M3, I drove one of the new ones (it was stripped out as well) at palmer motorsports and it didnt seem as fast as the C2S even though stats wise I think its similar. Get rid of the BMW, trade the C2S in and get a turbo?
Don't reckon it will cost much more than a C2S to run

Icemans OP is do we see his logic, I wonder if his logic is thus....

The M3 as a stop gap (why not? he has that chance of a new one for a good deal) and once qualified, the Porsche he really wants & will be able to afford..... ? GT3? :)

Once qualified and working as an intern and then a surgical resident you seriously won't have time to entertain a flash car, or you'll be way too tired to appreciate it. I've changed my mind: you should definitely keep the 911. What's stopping you buying another faster 911 down the line anyway?

Sell the 1 series, extend the Porsche warranty, move on campus so you're not adding 36k miles a year on it  and enjoy it rather than worrying about it. :)

personally I think it will still look bad driving into university in a M3, a 335i, or even a C63 (most people will not know that its any different to a normal C-Class) may be better.

I can see why you would want to sell the 911, but if your doing a lot of miles it may be worth keeping the 135i and just racking up the miles on that car as you are probably going to take quite a big hit on it anyway if you sell it now.

If you've got $70k now (well less what the porsche is worth), why if you didn't spend it would you not still have it in a couple of years?

Keep the porsche, enjoy life now while you are young. Once you are a surgeon/radiologist and 5 years older your priorities will have changed anyway. Keep the money you have (from selling the 135i) in the bank in case you do change your mind later! If in 3 years you decide it's not practical to keep the porsche then you can trade in for a 3yr old M3 and would be in the same position anyway!

The M3 sounds like a compromise in both senses - your heart wants the porsche, your head says that even the M3 isn't that practical. It's in the no mans land between thus it probably won't satisfy either your head or your heart!

Well the deal on that particular M3 didn't go ahead. It was a good deal but I managed to swing a deal for $4k more that gets me a brand new one built.

I've not done the deal yet but Gibbo you will be pleased to know I'm testing a GT500 this week, 550hp out of the crate with potential for 700+ with a few grand. I can get a left over 11 or a 12 for $50k with the sport and tech pack. Could be fun :D

Shame really as the GT500 doesnt use the new Direct injection 5.0 V8 that everybody is raving about. It uses the 5.4 Supercharged V8 out of the Ford GT.

Not exactly a bad engine, but not as good as the 5.0. You could get the 5.0 to similar level of tune to the GT500 without a supercharger apparently. But obviously this will require a decent amount of modification, which may not be up your street.

It's still a dramatic improvement over the 2010 iron block though. I'm going to look at one tomorrow, I might be hugely disappointed with the quality but it's good to keep an open mind :)

Let us know how you get on Iceman, be interesting to hear your thoughts.

if i was in your shoes however, I wouldn't bother getting rid of the cars you have. Both are technically brilliant at the jobs they do. The whole Car park Paranoia although it does feature into the ownership of each car, it would also affect the M3 purchase. If you really want to get out of that mindset, why not get rid of the 1 series and get an older 330d, or 325d. Something which will eat miles and you can essentially change it in a couple of years down the line when needed. Cars like that don't lose massive amounts of value and what you get for the money is good. Keep the 911, as I really believe if you get rid of it for a M3, or Mustang, you'd miss it.

I'd be very surprised if you found the Mustang better than the M3, there's a reason why the M3 is the market leader for what it does.

Also, if you do buy a big Mustang, surely your car park paranoia would still be there? What's the depreciation on a Mustang like compared to the M3 / 911 / 1 series?

In the USA a Mustang isn't a rare thing. It's the same as seeing some sort of hot hatch here, rental companys all use Mustangs. Sure a GT500 isn't an ever day thing but it's not in the same league as a 911 over the pond.

No, I'm not saying it is. However, if Iceman goes and buys a new Mustang, surely he'd have car park paranoia in that?

The 911 is in a different class, obviously, just the same as the M3 is in my eyes a different class of car, both are the best at what it does. Both are market leaders.

Personally Iceman, I think the way for you to go is to look for a cheaper, older car. Ignore the lack of warranty etc; Get a 330, 325, Older Jag or something similar and keep the 911. That way you can rack up miles on something which you have no emotional attachment too, and still keep the 911, which is pretty clear to all, is your baby. Get rid of the 1 series, it's neither here or there and drop 10k on a car, which you can do many 1000's of miles in, in comfort, with a decent spec, but which you wouldn't mind losing 5-6k on.

Nah, he'd just look like a tourist.

Iv lost the plot now, if you are in any way worried about money why are you considering a new car ?
