Am I doing the right thing? Trade in question.

Why would you buy a used $55k car when a new one was available for $4k more?

I wouldnt be buying either if i was suddenly short of money, whats the point, if they are going to scratch a Porsche they will scratch an M3.

If hes suddenly money concious why is he buying either.

He isnt suddenly short of money, he's trying to fix his outgoings and excercise relative financial prudence.

No what hes doing is wasting money hand over fist, but of course that dosent matter if hes not trying to economise, my bad i read the thread wrong.

I'm simply looking at options. If I'm going to drop almost 9k on warranties, I'd like to see what options that amount of money on top of my current cars would allow me.

So.... Humble pie time. I drove the GT500 yesterday... All I can say is holy ****! There's something rather intoxicating about that V8 and the exhaust note. 550hp out of the crate is pretty huge too, made my 911 look slow!

Do it, sure the 911 or M3 is probably a 'better' car but sounds like you'll have the most fun in a Mustang and it'll suit your needs (not being too flash for the car park).

So your seriously thinking about selling 1 epic and one so so car for a Ford, salute!

I'm just keeping an open mind. The Shelby GT500 is no ordinary Ford, they only make a few each year and they're $55k, a far cry from the regular mustang.

Advantage to this one is that it would be a trade with no money to change, would also remove the finance (albeit very small) on the BMW and have a brand new car.

Like I said, its not like I've written the cheque, I'm just considering all options.

The question is though Iceman, would you be able to park it and not have the same issues as parking your Porsche there?

if I was in your position, I'd try and get an extended test drive, say a day or two, take it to your place of study and give it a good go. Can you live with it? Do you need the 911 and 1 series?

I wouldnt be chopping in personally, but you know the circumstances and situation better than any one!

I don't see what's wrong with having the 911 as your only car

I don't understand this either?

Sell the 135i, bank the cash. Buy a warranty for the 911, sell it when bored, and use the cash from the sale of both cars to fund whatever you fancy as a replacement (991?), whenever the time comes...

Its clear that most of you don't think as far ahead as I am.

I love my 911, it's a wonderful car but it is almost 6 years old now and has 45k miles on it. I'm in medical school for another 4-5 years at least, this will be my best time to change the cars before they depreciate so far that I'll be unable to easily slot into a brand new or 1 year old car. I do not intend to change the next car I buy until I'm a practicing surgeon/radiologist.

An extended warranty will see me 4 years from the middle of this year. It's the best part of $5k for the warranty on the 911 and it still excludes a bunch of items AND has an excess for each claim, albeit a small one. In 4 years time the car may well have 80-90k miles on it, be 10 years old and I'll be unable to get any form of warranty on it at all. Porsche's outside of warranty can be a frightening prospect which is why I'm considering all my options.

I do not need the money in the bank, that's completely irrelevant. The only reason I'm not just buying another 911 is because over in the US at least, the 09's and 10's are going through an odd transition where the prices are inordinately high, ie $100k sticker price cars with 20k miles on them still going for $90-95k, unheard of in the Porsche market over here but it's currently the way things are.

I am simply trying to give myself projectable costs in the future as when medical school and my internship really start to take over, I don't want to be worrying about anything other than that.

A new/2011 M3 or GT500 offer me warranty for the next 6 years and in the case of the M3, I don't even have to worry about maintenance for the next 4 either. My 911 is due a new set of brakes soon and will be due some tires too so that's worth factoring in.

In an ideal world, I'd just buy a new 911 and be done with it but unfortunately that's not a sensible decision right now with the inflated prices, I'd just be setting myself up for epic depreciation. It probably seems a crazy thought process to some of you but when you've owned a 911 for a while, you'll understand why it's wise to think forward.

I've not made my mind up either way yet, I'm still looking for a new 911 and I have a possible bead on one in New Jersey. Ironically there's a new 911 50 miles from me but the guy wants $5k more than I'm prepared to pay for it, it's only got 1800 miles on it and has all the options ticked.

The GT500 option's just something fun, it's soooo different to the 911 that its not even worth comparing, 700hp would certainly put a smile on my face every day that's for sure.
