Hi there,

I registered an account with "Dreamhost" last July, there was a special offer meaning I get a domain name and hosting for $5 or something like that. However, I never really had the patience to set my site up, and just left it. Now I get regular e-mails telling me I owe $119.40, and that they've been trying to bill my card and failed (I changed accounts about 2 weeks after setting this thing up).

Thought I'd cancel my account to shut them up, but they want $19.40 for me to cancel. Can I just leave it? They still have my billing address (home address) from my last card.

The e-mails are just from a robot, and are all the same:

This is just a notice that your DreamHost Account #******
("********") has a balance of $119.40 (including any charges not
due until 2007-09-08), with $119.40 due (since 2007-08-08).

You also have $119.40 past due (owed since 2007-07-08), and if
by 2007-09-08 you do not pay at least the $119.40 part, your
account will be automatically suspended until payment is received.

If you would like to CLOSE your account with DreamHost, just visit:

https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=billing.accounts

Log in if you need to, then click the "close this account" link. If you close
your account you won't be charged $119.40 on 2007-09-08... please stay!

| NOTE: Any account with any charges 60 days past due is considered
| delinquent and will have service discontinued until payment is made,
| so it is very important for you to make your payment as soon as you
| can. In order to help prevent a service outage, we will send you
| periodic reminders until payment is made.

WHAT DO YOU OWE MONEY FOR?

We have the last payment on this account to be $9.95 on 2006-07-09 11:53:16.

Since then the following charges have been made to the account:

2007-07-08 - $119.40 for "My Crazy Domain Insane" through 2008-07-07.

For full information on your previous balance please visit your account
invoice, which you may view from the web panel, here:

Do you think they'll ever hunt me down and send a lawyer with a £200,000 bill?!

Thanks

If you want to keep the account then just fork out the money.

If not, leave them... As far as I know they shouldn't be able to charge you money just to leave them.

Do you actually owe them $100 or is it that you will owe them $100 if you continue to use the account?

Lol @ all the OcUK replies.

I don't want the account! I've never used it and never will. I already owe them $119.40 - that's for $9.95/month hosting for the last year.

Oh noes.

Re-reading it...

You owe them $119.40 for the domain, you haven't set it up but you still own the domain.

To be honest it's your own fault for neglecting the fact that you owned it/cancelled your card (etc) and not told them how to take payments.

How long have you been receiving emails saying that they can't take payments?

If they've been contacting you since the first payment failed, then why haven't you paid

They only started mailing me recently - it's an old e-mail account that I only checked by chance.

I had COMPLETELY forgotten I ever signed up for this bloody thing.

OH NO!!!

listen, they are crazy domain insane people.

pay up and next time keep an eye out for whatever you put your cc details on eh ;)

I'm not sure what answer you're looking for.
You owe them the money even if you didn't use the account - it was up to you to cancel the account.
If you did cancel it then you would have received e-mail confirmation so you can now forward that to their accounts department and they should write the bill off as the mistake was theirs.
If you didn't cancel the account then you owe them.

They might not bother chasing you, however at the same time it's a pretty open & shut case against you.
In which case they may well decide to pursue as once they do catch up they will just add any administration charges in "bringing you to book" to your bill.
