Am I?

Thumbs up to the Guys or Gals that want me to name specifics...nope not this time deary I see a trap coming

To BB I know and understand that being an educated ethnic minority comes with it's downfalls. I know that those that dare name call on here are only exhausting the fact that they wouldn't dream of name calling in real life because they are good little boys and girls...awe! aren't they so cute

I was an ethnic minority once.

My, how charmingly coquettish you are.

You know, sometimes people ask questions because they want to know the answers, and so they can further the conversation.

I've been here over 5 years, so I'd like to think I know a bit about the general population here, but if you don't want to listen to me, or to others with even more experience, then that's your lookout.

Words can't hurt you.

Bull****. And endorsed by a Don as well. Shame on you. Really.

"Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me."

One of the worst pieces of misinformation that ever gets taught to children, frankly I think it's despicable when the truth is exactly the opposite. Let me tell you I've stepped into the ring many times and been hit harder than I thought imaginable and experienced pain I never thought I would - and none of it has ever come close to the pain I've felt when people have said certain things to me, or my friends.

This is a real pet peeve of mine, and crap like the post I quoted simply justifies, perpetuates and excuses hatred and discrimination.

However, a lot of stuff said on this forum is meant light heartedly and in jest, I always try to recognise that when reading things that I may think of as 'wrong', otherwise I'd blow up every time I came to GD.

Taking that phrase to stand alone (outside of the forum context), I disagree with it enourmously.

Words can be offensive and cause turmoil.
.

if people let them

people shouldnt , especially when coming from faceless people you may never meet on the internet

Don't really see what's wrong with asking for an example..

Take what's written with a pinch of salt. Most of the stuff posted here that I see is meant in a light manner anyway.

I was reffering to offence generally, but it does still hold true on the forums.

Also, you have selectively quoted a fragment of the passge. Clearly there are circumstances in which offence is justified, in other circumstances it isn't justified. You can't just apply a blanket rule because there are simply too many variables to contemplate.

A lot of stuff said on this forum is said by idiots, so can be safely ignored.

I'm not sure its THAT frequent to be honest, on these sort of issues it is often the same people over and over again.

Indeed. I was more refering to the behaviour of the types that frequently gang up on an OP unnecessarily (which is IMO childish).

On the other hand, I can be outrageously childish on the forums, so it's all swings and roundabouts. It's never a good idea to take anything too seriously, especially on here.

As in words posted on an internet forum. Don't get real life and the internet mixed up.

Anyway, as said before, don't take the forums too seriously.

That is a fair point. It's a lot easier to surf on over to somewhere else, or just turn the computer off, than to change schools or jobs or whatever.

In my world, its this simple.
A staffordshire bull terrier is a dog, but we call it a staffie.
Simple.

People can also have nicknames like, poms, chinks, etc. How can you tell if its being used a racial slur, well in most cases its obvious by the manner in which its used.

For instance, I went to the chinky last night, (is not racist)
However, I ******* hate chinky **** (is an entirely different manner)

Its not the term, its the person using it, its also a very grey area.
So yes your being over sensitive, but your a women so its not surprising ;)

It's an internet forum....

Don't take it or yourself too seriously.

Much of what gets posted on here is jokes anyhow, it doesn't take much to see that.

You can't make offending people illegal because taking offence is entirely subjective.
