Am surpised cars do not log their speed these days

With all the latest electric technology that is put into cars these days it surprises me that they do not record the speeds the car has been driven at for last hour or day or week

If they did surely this would really help the investigation when there involved in an accident...

How do you know your Tesla is doing just that to the servers? :p
 
I thought some of them did keep a limited record in there onboard 'puter. Its prob erased on ignition off or something but some prob do have a small record of the last few drives or something.

I have heard rumours before of some cars having like a black box that records or logs some it last speeds/braking/throttle position etc

But I don't know if these rumours are true or false or which cars are meant to have this..

You're assuming speed is a relevant data in the cause of an accident...

Even from official data that makes "speeders" out to be child killers... EVEN they show speed to be a very infrequent relevant factor in the cause of an accident...

Speeding ain't so bad, as long as you're not on a residential street...

As for your silly suggestion... I think there would be a massive outcry against that abusive invasion of privacy...

Yeah most people are very against any kind of black box or "government" intrusion into their car (or lives in general) - sadly it seems there has been some erosion of that resistance to that of late as it is far too easily abused if it becomes pervasive.

Meanwhile we all seem totally fine with the increasing prevelance of the average Joe driving around constantly videoing everyone on his 3 separate 4K dashcams...

No they're not. Just tell them it'll save them some money (black box for insurance), get them something for free (Google services) or 'stop the terrorists / think of the children!!1' (Snooper's charter).

Teslas do log and broadcast all this data, how else do you think they know the status of (or interaction with) Autopilot.
 
Why would anyone want a car too unless that person specifically wanted it?

I have a dash cam that records speed, and I'm not perfectly happy with that if I'm honest.

No matter what people think, to 95% of driver's, speed limits are not exactly the limits. And many don't want this forcibly recorded to use against us.

Lots of high spec cars do it.

Our Lexus records average speed for each trip, distance , time, etc. However it resets for each trip and afaik doesn't get logged but it does have a hard drive, so it could be easily done.

The Nissan gtr logs throttle, acceleration, speed, etc. Seen a Subaru do the same too.
 
My 6 series did. As I found out when I had it in having some work carried out and the guy remarked that the 300 mile journey I'd done the day before must have had loads of traffic as I never got above 60.
