Currently have an am4 5800x3d paired with an MSI 4080S.

I only ever play Iracing on a Quest 3.

I've got the upgrade itch.

Going about it the wrong way round by buying some ddr5 ram already. Ridiculous price of £330 for 32gb (2 * 16) . Looks like it's not going to get any cheaper for the next two or three years. So bit the bullet now.
its this:

Team Group T-Force Delta RGB DDR5 6000MHz 32GB 2x16GB CL28 Dual AMD Expo and Intel XMP.

Looking to get cpu and compatable motherboard.

Probably going to get a 9800X3D.

I know so little about current motherboard ranges. So I need some advice on which motherboard to choose. Possibly a B650? Budget roughly £150 to £200. Is that a reasonable budget though?
I'll be keeping my 4080S.

Opinions and advice needed please.

I find the B650 is a really good mid point. Any brand is going to be good value for money. Just get the features that you will use.

I get the upgrade itch too, so bank it, spank it.

B650 has two main problems: no official PCI-E 5.0 support for graphics (some have it undocumented, apparently) and it might need a BIOS flash for 9000 series CPUs. They're fine for cheaper builds (if priced around £100-£120, but not something I'd be keen to pair with a 9800X3D.

I'd look at B850 which should have PCI-E 5.0 graphics (not all do) and with the absence of USB4 on X870/X870E, less sharing issues.

B650E is a different beast because it does have PCI-E 5.0 graphics, Strix B650E-F was widely recommended at one point with only issue I'm aware of being the LAN.

I wouldn't be keen on going too near £200, because that's entry-level X870/X870E territory.

I reckon I'll have to do a bit of googling but B650e might be a good bet.

Thank you.

B850 has everything that B650-E has, and B650-E boards are usually more expensive as these are considered "higher-end"

For £150 either of these 2 boards will suffice as long as you have no exotic requirements.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £299.98 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Thank you for the replies folks. I ended up getting a 7800x3d from the MM.
Then ordered myself an MSI tomahawk b650 .
it was cheap but seems to get good reviews.

good choice, i personally use the b650 mortar :)
just do note that the b650 tomahawk is a full pcie 4 setup (ie no pcie 5) so hopefully you didn't pay over the odds for it

There are so many flavours of AM5 motherboards I could have researched and swithered forever. Not bothered about Pcie5. No, didn't pay over the odds. Cost me arounf £122 from the rainforest. Used, like new says the description. We'll see if it is "like new".

swithered

Scottish English
verb
past tense: swithered; past participle: swithered
  1. be uncertain as to which course of action to choose.
"Leonard swithered as to whether he should enter the arts or commerce"
Damn. I have a decently robust and diverse lexicon, but that's a word I've never used and should do more often.

Back to the topic, enjoy the motherboard :)

Do people have experience with the strix b650e-f. I am considering asus strix b650e-f for the 9950x. I can get this board for 139 euro.

Is the vrm on the board more then enough for a overclocked or agrrssive pbo in very hot days?

Or should I just go for a b850 board
