Amazing but how does it work????

Add and subtract will always leave you with a multiple of 9, all multiples of 9 have the same symbol
 
Basic maths really, based on those rules there are only a certain number of numbers that you can end up with, each one of these numbers has the same symbol.
EDIT: beaten like a redheaded stepchild
 
but the symbol isnt always the same


But the number the symbol is on is always a multiple of 9, doesn't matter what the symbol is.

To put it another way all the multiples of 9 have the same symbol above them. :)
