Amazon Announcement Day 06/09/2012 – 18:30 BST

So a non starter for anyone that does their research.

Not really, some of us aren't bothered about willy waving specs, if the build quality is good and it doesn't have the plethora of issues that the Nexus 7 has I'd happily trade a bit of power for it.

Not sure what the GPU is like on these OMAPs though...

Not too bad.

The HD 7 looks like it has a better screen, build, wifi and it's £40 cheaper. Not a bad choice tbh. (Even though stock Android will always wins! :p)

*Sigh*
I'm sticking with my keyboard until it fails then.

I'd have loved the new kindle to have:
Touch screen and hardware keyboard but with hardware page turn buttons *the single most irritating thing about the Touch*
Wifi, 3g & bluetooth
Open epub, CBR, doc, docx, ODF support, better PDF support
Ability to take written notes on it *kind of like the iRiver Cover Story can*

I would have bought 2 immediately. Now? I'll stick with the old one.
I'm not even bothered about the light in the new kindle. Barely use the one in my kindle case.

Fire HD 8.9 sounds interesting. But, by the time it arrives over here, we'll have many other tablets that do the same thing.

Answered my own question. Not shipping to this country. Just tried to pre order. No plans to visit the US until well into next year either. Does anyone know of a reliable company that will purchase for you and send on?

I'm a big user of amazon and I must admit when I received an email notifying me about the fire HD I was very interested. I've been considering getting a tablet for quite some time and for £159 this seems to be a awesome deal.

My knowledge of the tablet market isn't great so can someone point out any flaws this tablet has? It almost seems too good to be true.

- It's version of Android is a very heavily modified version of Ice Cream Sandwich with no Play Store. We don't know how easy it will be to install a custom rom.
- It's processor is slightly weaker than that of the Nexus 7 which is the same price (albeit with half the storage).
- There are ads on the lock screen.
- You have to wait 6 weeks to get it when you could get the Nexus 7 now.

That said, it is still a good deal.

Have they even confirmed it would be ad supported over here? If I remember rightly the Kindle E-Reader was/is sold as ad supported in USA but has never been sold in this manner over here.

[EDIT]Tis indeed ad supported over here too, ah well at least you can opt out. Wonder how that affects the competitiveness of the price?

Amazon put out a statement saying you can't just opt out sadly. Although I think I read somewhere that you can pay an extra £15 to opt out.

With an Amazon Prime subscription it would be a very tempting bit of kit - great way to integrate all the free media access you get from Prime. (the US Prime subscription has a ridiculous amount of free stuff included, don't know about the UK though)

Just pre-ordered the Fire HD 8.9 4G version :) It comes with a 250MB/month data plan for just $50/year! I know 250MB isn't much, but it's fine with me - I'll only be doing the basics while I'm on the move....the rest of the time I'll be on WI-FI.
