AMD 3500 vs. Opty UP 144

Hi all,

I have a 3500+ newcastle core cpu (130nm chip) currently running at 2.5ghz and was wondering if i would see a noticable performance increase if i were to get a opty up 144 instead (as they are on offer in this week only ) and then sell my 3500+??

I will definately be wanting to overclock it, preferably over 2.6ghz - is this possible??

plus with my 3500 being a 130nm chip it runs very warm, late 50s under load which im not too happy about!

Even if i could get the "upgrade" for not much by selling mine like i said?

I intend to get a whole new system this summer anyway so it was just an idea to have a new cpu to play with overclock it and see what i could get out of it! my 3500 hits a brick wall @ 2.6 btw, and dont know whether just for the fact that it would run a lot cooler would be worth it?

Dunno, maybe a little less than £100 on Ebay.

EDIT: Just been looking at some prices on Ebay and I'd say between £50 and £100.

cool cheers mate, i reckon i might go for it, put it on ebay and if i get towards a 100 for it then spend a bit extra and get the opty!

just been checking that my mobo supports a high fsb because the opty 144 has a x9 multiplier right?? it seemed ok at 280fsb so i'l get at least 2.5ghz if it is also a good chip - does anyone else have an asus a8n sli dlx mobo and high a high fsb?

Edit - Also I got a price check on mm about a 3500+ newcastle and apparently a guy sold one for £80 not long ago..

Therefore if you do stick it on the bay then u probably will get at least that..

Your going to need a CPU before you sell your 3500 aren't you?

yes i was intending on buying the opty before selling mine...? which was why i was after opinions

There was a post on here the other day about someone in a similar situation deciding whether it was worth going from their opteron 170 to a 175. They bought the 175 tested it and it clocked to a similar speed or slightly lower so they cleaned it up and sent it back under the distance selling act (I think that's what its called).

i dont understand do you mean buy the processor and then if it doesnt clock very well send it back?
