As the title says

AMD 64 3400+ @2.2ghz

or

P4 Northwood 800FSB @3.4GHZ

Please give reasons for your choice

Thanks in advance

hmmmm tough choice, the pentium, imho, is a better all round CPU, but boards based on the skt478 design dont have the option of adding a PCI-E graphics card(well none that ive seen anyway) whereas some skt754 boards for the athlon do... i reckon the northwood core would clock rather well, if thats what you have in mind...

I have a 3.0 northwood and a AMD64 3200 and I use the northwood as my main machine and the AMD as a server/download machine. I use them like this because the Northwood just seems to run better than the AMD64 with a lot of windows open. I don't play games on a PC so gaming performance did not matter to me.

I am soon going to go Conroe for my main rig and relegate the P4 to my secondary machine and get rid of the AMD64.

As far as gaming, most of the work is done by your graphics card on new games and a 3.4 P4 won't bottleneck the graphics card. I may be a bit biased as I've got a P4 myself :p

A P4 3.4GHz will seriously bottleneck any card above about a 6800 level

It does depend on what you need it for though as there's not much in it

The P4 will have HT tech which can lead to a smoother, more responsive system, particuarly with multiple windows open. It can cause some programs to run slowly though - you can turn it off

I still have my trusty old northwood [email protected] Ghz.

I know its hardly new tech, but it still keeps up with the best, and until conroe is released there has been no real reason for me to upgrade. The perfroance boost wasnt significant enough. I would say go for the P4 for overall use, or if you do game a lot, for the athlon. Neither will disappoint you.

well, its all down to what you do with it. from a gaming point of view yeah, there isnt a whole lot in it. However if you do anything besides gaming there is a big difference. I would say get the a64 because it's cheap, will run cool and you can get a pci-e board for it. it'll be an all-round good performer.

for me, encoding is one of the main uses of my rig. Even my 3ghz opty 148 isnt fast enough for me, so the thought of moving to a dual core conroe has me salivating.
