Was anyone else like me waiting to see if AMD could pull something out of their failing hat that might just surprise us?

I kinda feel even though they are not out there yet that Phenom and the 790 are just something to keep pace with intel that once again came X many months too late.

I would consider AMD but I am now beginning to think anything I bought from them right now wouldn't last because it is so mediocre they need to replace it soon. I just have no confidence in purchasing a product from them that could offer longevity to some extent.

Quad crossfire? Do you need 4 cards to compete with nvidia/intel? One can only imagine the psu you need to run 4 cards with a quad cpu.

After such a pathetic R600 launch a failure with phenom and 790 is a real final nail in the coffin. Faith in AMD was failing and this the way things are looking will undoubtably destroy my faith completely until they can prove to me they can bring something competative to the table.

yeah I just don't know what they are doing at the moment! of course there is a premium for a new product but can phenom even match Core 2 let alone penryn. A Q6600C2D at the moment will hit 3.4-3.6 Ghz maybe higher. Probably can't get 3Ghz out of a phenom. That is a huge issue when Q6600's are out now and have been for some time.

It's like the R600 all over again...

I really wanted something to get even moderately excited about, I really did.

Depending on the CPU prices I may be swayed, looking at those 790 prices though... Meh, fair enough if they are outstanding motherboards, if the CPU performance isn't there though, what's the point?

Really want to see "real" benchmarks from regular forum folks, not from a website possibly looking for more hits.

I hope someone brings out a board with a less elaborate cooling system. I suspect all these heatpipes are unnecessary for a chipset with such a low TDP and are no doubt pushing the prices up unnecessarily.

This may be a stupid question, but, these x2 boards are under the "Crossfire Ready" section. Does this mean I can't use x2 Nvidia cards as it's not SLi? :o

I know it may be stupid, but my reasoning is it must mean this as there is a section for "SLi Ready" motherboards. Thanks for any clarification. :o

Yeah thats what it means. AMD want to lock you to crossfire on their motherboards and Nvidia want to lock you to SLI on theirs.

Actually they are CrossfireX compatbile which means up to 4 ATI cards :D

These are just the first to be announced and are similarly priced to the equivalent Intel boards, so with the Phenom expected to come in under the Intel pricewise, with DDR2 not DDR3, the AMD AM2+ route should be the cheaper option.

There are a couple of MSI boards just announced using the same chipset
The K9A2 PLATINUM and K9A2 CF-F @ about £125 and £80 respectively

Only 4x SATA ports... WTF are they thinking? Wow the price of those is absolutely appalling... as much as a high-end X28 mobo! The Phenom CPU's are supposed to be undercutting Intel in price... how are they going to manage that with motherboard prices like this!
