AMD ATi Pulled a fast one HD 3800... ?

If it's true about them calling the 2950 stuff hd3800, then to me it is such a dumb move. It not a new architecture or anything, it just a marketting stunt, how.. .. . lame.

Perhaps they are trying to make people think they are one step ahead of Nvidia this time? When in reality they aren't (apart from releasing revisions earlier of course).

Hrm.. not sure what to think about this one. On one hand I like the fact that they're getting rid of the useless 2 letter acronyms at the end of the model numbers but to say that they have an entirely new range when they're the same architecture is a bit confusing.

Its not such a bad idea to change to 3800 because of the bad reputation the 2900 has. If these new cards come with the performance to back up the new name and without all the things that were wrong with the 2900s then its a pretty good move as people won't be going around saying bad things about 3800s but will still be saying 2900s were bad.

Well remember that r700 is also supposed to be based on the same sort of tech as r600 is according to all thats known about it atm.

Assuming they don't have some unknown beast of a GPU waiting in the wings - yes it seems a daft move. But is it any more silly than nVIDIA releasing an 8800GTS with 112 SPs and keeping the same name?

They've actually timed this pretty well. If the G92 based cards are going to be released on the 29th, the factories will be hard at work now. Boxes and manuals will already have been printed etc. ATI turn up a couple of weeks later, with what (as far as your average punter is concerned) appears to be a new Gen GPU supporting DX10.1. Job's a goodun!

Edit: I keep hearing this 'same architecture'. It's clearly not. DX10.0 to DX10.1 is probably a bigger jump (feature wise) than from 9xxx series to Xxxx series. We can only hope the performance jump will be there.

I just can't wait till all these new cards are out so we can see what's the deal with this DX10.1 malarky. I'll be gutted if these new cards from both ATI & Nvidia are great performing and priced about £170 odds as it will make my 2900Pro purchase feel silly for a few weeks of waiting but tbh I thought the 2900Pro's would be gone before these cards are released and I seriously doubt they will be as cheap as the 2900Pro but who knows?.

Are the new GTS's and GTX's DX10.1 also?.

Doesn't look like G92 (new 8800GT, GTS) are 10.1 but it's still mostly rumour and speculation.

Nobody's yet mentioned the possibility that the HD3800 series aren't RV670, Although I'll be very surprised if they've managed to get the R700 ready yet.

so it has come to this then, the numbers game, increase the cards model number = charge more cash for the same thing with a different sticker on it.

guess desperate times call for desperate measures.

would be a rather hillarious move if ATi did have a few tricks left up its ever shortening sleeve, however i doubt it (id love to be proven wrong though)
