AMD Phenom II Breaks 7GHz Barrier

A while back I went to a fun overclocking event held by AMD, where there was a lot of vapor, some exploding burritos, and some overclocking that got tantalizingly close to 7GHz. It was just an arbitrary number, and they broke a bunch of other records, but they couldn’t quite hit that last target. But a few months and I can only guess how much liquid helium later, they nailed it.

Their video, far from the light hearted hijinx and sloppy editing of my own, is a professional affair, dominated by some nu-metal that perfectly embodies the concept of overclocking. Well, that’s not really true. But it’s better than the constant hissing noise that is the soundtrack to mine.

Unfortunatly the Ghz race is over. The direction intel are going means that delta-t and from that overclocking range is what should be looked at with their turbo mode. Also road maps for both companies look to be integrating CPU and GPU into one package.
 
artificial diamond, thats one of the things i was watching about on TV the other day and how they reckon computer processors will be made from diamond instead of silicon in years to come, diamond can handle tons more heat safely than silicon so higher clock speeds will obviously come with them ;)

I guess SF3D just has to start keeping events in the middle of winter and outside.


:eek: wow! But who knows...fast forward 5 years and 7ghz could be a sensible overclock for ourselves :D
Just remember how many years it was when P4 was being overclocked heavily up to fair 7GHz (later even to above 8GHz) and how problem was also then same as today: insane heat production.
Clock speed sensible for constant/normal use haven't really increased much from that time.
 
Doesn't really surprise me tbh, the main reason it couldn't be done (as stated above) is the insane amount of heat produced whilst running a chip at these speeds, coupled with the cold bug which AMD chips previously suffered from (can't remember which erratta it was) which just point blank stopped AMD chips from booting when they were below a certain temp. Now that they have worked that out of the Phenom II range, it was just a matter of time.
