*** AMD Radeon R9 290X Reviews Thread ***

If I was about to buy a 290 I would want to see benchmarks run for a good half hour before being measured,I very much suspect at this point the card would be throttling.

haha I don't actually believe that, it was sarcasm, he just seemed very intent on focusing on the number 95. :D

Ah fair enough. :p

Not disputing the card runs hot, but just raise the fan profile or wait for custom coolers if thats a problem. Different strokes for different folks and all that. Me personally i wouldn't care too much but everyone is different. I'm used to hot and noisy amd reference cards. They still overclock well and offer great performance.

I'd never buy a reference card anyway but focusing on 95c is just daft, it isn't going to run that hot in games unless you want the fan absolutely silent.

At least AMD has went all out instead of holding the card back for power usage or temp.

You do know these AMD reference coolers are pants don't you? 10/10 for effort, but you are aware that AIB's with custom coolers that run considerably cooler are around the corner right?

I got a release day 7970 that ran up to 85ºc in Furmark on the reference cooler, it's now under water and gets no hotter than 50ºc

You've said all you need to say, cherry picked all the shills reviews, you don't have to repost them ad-nauseum.

i've edited your post for you in my quote as you may of forgotten to write it in green :p

Some review highlights for you, yup great GPU  It's clear that logic has left the OCUK forums today lol.

We decided to forgo the video demonstrating what a 95% duty cycle sounds like. It’s pointless and potentially bad for your long-term hearing. The noise is simply unbearable without commercial-grade ear protection.

the R9 290X consumes more power than two overclocked GeForce GTX 780s in SLI with more than one monitor attached.

(TTL OC3D)
The card runs hot at 95°C which heats up the whole of the inside of your case, and that's a problem.

the moment you quit a game the fan drops to 20% despite the card being able to boil water. So it takes ages for it to cool down.

(Tech power up)
My neighbors actually complained, asking why I used power tools that late at night

It loses to the 780 / Titan when overclocked, both of which have been around for a while. It runs hotter, uses more power, has ridiculous temps. Since when was 95c ok?

95C !! Wow.

The price is on par with the 780, except the 780 runs cooler and quieter, uses less power, faster when overclocked.

I don't understand anyone buying this over a 780 unless you're die hard AMD fan.

Yeah let's ignore the sane comments :p Because you know I'm right and have nothing to counter with more like.

95C ! and over 400 watts. Yeah great card.

Hope you guys have LN2 on standby, you will need it for overclocking.

I wonder what the response will be if when overclockers underwater get theses at 1250. Gsync ?

I understand some of the points but its still a bit of cherry picking.

What i don't understand from some people is why having healthy competition is bad I am waiting to see the 780ti it might be a great card I am sure Nvidia had a rough idea of what to expect.

This will be why there is such a raft of results out there. The reviews that have the 290X clearly beating the 780, and sometimes Titans, will probably be running the 290X in fresh air or a well ventilated case. Maybe there's even some 290X cards with slightly more efficient cores, I would imagine running that close to the limit it could make quite a difference.

Ultimately I think it's a great card whatever way you look at it. It matches or beats a 780 even in the worst scenario for the same price, if not less, and beats Titans in the best scenarios for a huge amount less. I always watercool my cards so I'd definitely buy one, or two, if I was buying this gen. No way would I buy one and leave the cooler on, it'd be a 780 for sure in that case.

Really keen to see TechReport's xfire review. They're very thorough with multi gpu reviews and XMDA-based CrossFire looks like it could benefit more from X79 set ups.

Same.

I'd be lying if i said im not tempted to sell the 7950's but id still come up short and likely lose a bit of performance so not worth it.

Single card performance :)

Mind you I think if the 290's are cheap enough and clockwell they could really make a good CF setup that will blow away any single card setup.

This is a good point. A good run of something like BF3 would indeed show if the card is throttling and at what temps. On Titans, you set the throttle at 95C but it starts throttling at 70C, regardless of what that 95C says. I wonder if the same sort of thing happens on the 290X.

Dunno, but he waited 3 years for this moment. Let him enjoy it :)

:D comedy gold

My intent tomorrow is to rinse it within an inch of it's life :D.

Bet you a pint it doesn't. ;)
