*** AMD Radeon R9 290X Reviews Thread ***

I think he knows im right. :D

I think you know I think you are right as well :D

Anyways, I want to chuck in a thought for those still unsure of what to buy...

We have this card (Gigagbyte 780) @ £480 and from the 28th, it will have the new Batman, AC4 and Splinter Cell games.

And we have this card (Gigabyte 290X) @ £440. No free games sadly :(

but the £40 saving from the 780 makes them pretty even. Both great cards and neither will do you any harm in your system :)

Edit:

A little harsh on the moderating there?

Would a corsir AX860i cut it to run two of these in crossfire or are we pushing it.

You'll be fine.

1 card draws a max of 300w and you will never see that on real-life scenarios. A CPU will not go over 150W even with full load so whatever else you have in the system will still have 100w left to them.

Your real world usage will be somewhere around 400-500w though at max.

You mean this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-124-GI&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752

You had the 780 linked twice, the 290X comes with the Gold thingy, 3 Games.

You have a Titan, give the 290X a spin, you never know. you might like it.

That will be fine. Not 100% on massive overclocking (voltage adjustments) but for normal overclocking, no problems :)

Nice, would be at stock for a while anyway.

Very good, my cpu is at 4.6(ivybridge)

These 900D cases looks bare with only one card lol :)

Ultimately I think it's a great card whatever way you look at it. It matches or beats a 780 even in the worst scenario for the same price, if not less, and beats Titans in the best scenarios for a huge amount less. I always watercool my cards so I'd definitely buy one, or two, if I was buying this gen. No way would I buy one and leave the cooler on, it'd be a 780 for sure in that case.

I totally agree it's great to see AMD come back with something like the 290x, such a bloody shame they couldn't have made better cooling as then it would be going down in legend.

Anand pulled them up on the Cooler, its the same one as the reference 7970, its weedy and pathetic.

It will be much better with proper 3'rd party cooler on it, less throttling to so they should score even higher in benchmarks.

Fantastic card, let down by its reference cooler, its worth getting a £30 after market air cooler for it.

Yep and thanks :)

My aim was to pop a 290X in the 2nd PCI-E x16 slot and run a dual boot with W8 for the 290X and W7 for the Titan but I didn't want to have to water cool it. I can see I would need to for the noise but I could still do this on a custom card. I was talking with WhyScotty and the Lightning would be a good shout.

Interesting choice to limit the 3rd party manufactures until December, wonder why AMD did that. Would have liked to have seen a Sapphire Toxic 290x with 3 fan arrangement

Yeah.

90c + might be with in the GPU's design limits but i'm not sure i would be happy with something that warm in my case, my i7 boils as it is.

The Lightning version of this card could turn out to be epic, might be worth the wait.

Big props to AMD for this, great performance for a great price. And when you look at the potential of mantle as well should get even better, especially for everyone waiting for frostbite titles like BF4. Come December I'm seriously tempted to ditch my 780 in favor of a 290X on a custom board.
