AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

Ive seen the r9 290x for 5600 sweedish. Still way to much. Though if you counter the price for the BF4 + premium that is included its just above the 780GTX by around what 70quid? give or take. Still to much. But there is no doubt that they will try and harvest as many as they can with large wallets and then lower the price to fight perhaps the 780 GTX.. Or atleast that is what i hope is the case. I was planning for a 290x but if its gonna cost this much well scr*w it then.

I just did a conversion from the 5600 SEK to DKK(my currency) and then subtracted the cost of BF4 + Premium (that is included) and the price is actually just below the cheapest GTX 780 i could find by as much as 200 DKK which is 22,5 GBP. If thats the case after the preorder is up and prodect is released(without BF4) it suddenly became more attractive.

If AMD is matching GTX780 level pricing or only slightly undercutting,it does make me wonder if it is overall faster than a GTX780.

Even when AMD released the HD7970,it was priced the same as the GTX580 3GB and higher end GTX580 1.5GB models, but was generally faster overall.

Radeon R9 290X Priced at $729.99 on Newegg.com

http://www.techpowerup.com/191909/radeon-r9-290x-priced-at-729-99-on-newegg-com.html

$729 = £450 Plus 20% VAT = £540,

Could mean between £550 - £600 at launch.

Feeling pretty good about getting my GTX 780 for £450 now. Although that is still a lot of money tbh.

The air cooled versions of the GTX780 are around $650 to $770 on Newegg which is around £400 to £475 without taxes. Also, launch prices were a bit higher IIRC.

Considering the R9 290X version on pre-order is a special edition BF4 edition card,and its a launch price,the R9 290X looks to be around GTX780 level pricing.

I suspect at that level of pricing it probably is faster overall than a GTX780,even if it is at higher resolutions mostly.

£550-£600 seems about right on conversion. Looking to be more expensive than i was thinking it'd be.

Which again is for a limited BF4 edition subset of the R9 290X.

Hence,it is not really a true indication of what most R9 290X cards will be selling for,as only 8000 of the limited edition are being sold worldwide.

Even,Gibbo has indicated only 50 of the cards(or maybe a bit more) are available for sale by OcUK.

After taking price gouging into consideration, the bog standard R9 290X cards, are going to be cheaper.

You also forget that there is a R9 290 non-X being launched too.

Is a couple of weeks after the first batch is sold really that long to wait?

Remember, how people splurged money on the Geforce Titan, for the GTX780 to come along and do most of the job for much less.

Got to hand it to AMD / Nvidia, both have done a great job of inflating prices...

The smartest way to get the most value, is to buy tech about a year behind the latest release, that way you get ridiculous bargains, like we're seeing now with 7950's / GTX 670's etc. Also the most stable drivers etc.

I'll be holding on to my 780 for a long while yet I think. I'm slightly worried that 20nm GPU's will hike prices even more, we might see £600 launch prices

It is not solely them inflating prices. A lot of things are more expensive meaning higher overall cost. One of those is fuel, which has sky rocketed in recent years and has an impact on cost of products.

Please welcome the underdog challenger to the 290x which lands next week :
