Gibbo, I realise answering this question would be daft from your perspective.
But is there any chance you will get hold of the 165 which seem to have decent availability?

I suppose you will shift your X2 first, wait until the other UK etailers are dry and then push your own Optys at a good price. Atleast that is what seems like business sense to me :)

CPU now installed, just a gentle OC to start with, running at 2.52 GHz, still at stock volts, no surprises there, running 2 x SPrime 2004 to burn in the AS5.

On load one core is sitting at 53, the other at 49, this is with the Fan on my Evo 33 at 3,500 rpm, a litle higher than I like it as it's a bit noisy at this speed. Normally I run it at 2,700 when it is inaudible over the rest of the fans in the box.

I'll let it soak until later tonight then try upping the FSB closer to the 250 Mhz mark, as that is the speed my memory is supposed to be capable of.

At the moment, i've got 233x12 which means almost 2.8Ghz (4mhz away). It's stable. I'm gonna go for 3.0 in a bit. I've got CPU-Z validation to prove it: http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=155074

I think you may have misread the first line DJKahuna. It should be a 4600!

Mine was prime stable after 3 hours at 2.5, then I upped it to 225 FSB, 2700MHz, and it was still OK for 30 mins.

I then stepped up to 236 FSB, Core 1 failed Prime after 1 min 24secs. I'm still at stock voltage, may up this a bit tomorrow and see if we can get it to 2.8 on Air cooling. Temps were still OK at 2.8+

Time for some shut-eye!
 
Up early to try a few more tests. I now have the Vcore set to 1.4v, the max available on my ASRock 939Dual Sata2, that reads as 1.39-1.44 in CPUZ. Stock was 1.375v.FSB is now at 235, giving me 2820MHz. Only been priming for a short time, but no errors so far.

I think the two temperature readings I'm getting for the Core in MBM5 are from the CPU diode and the motherboard CPU sensor, so that's why they are about 3 or 4 degrees apart. Presumably the higher one is the core, it responds quicker when you start/stop the load on the CPU.

So far I'm happy. This chip has replaced an Opteron 165 which will go into my other (nForce 3) system. Hopefully it will do 2.6 in that board and give me the satisfaction of dual core in both systems.

With the Opteron in this board I couldn't get more than 2.5 GHz, I couldn't get mine stable at any frequency over 280 whatever bios I loaded. I don't think I've ever done so many bios changes as I have on this system, it started at 1.2 and is now running 2.2. I didn't try all the steps in between, but I did run a couple of OC beta bios as well as the factory one's.
 
The reason for that EOL information is because AMD have been looking to phase out the X2 CPU's with 2x1Mb Cache for a while now as its hampering Opteron sales. As you will notice that there is no EOL information for the 4200, 4600 and 5000 in either 939 or AM2... I am sure that AMD will realise by the amount of CPU's that OCUK have bought and supplied that there is still a large market for 939 CPU's... :)
 
I didn't misread, i just miswrote :D. And the demand for 939 is still very high. People just aren't ready to shel out for 65nm or AM2. Mainly because it's not affordable (due to the cost of DDR2 at the moment). I think people would rather have a 90nm that's as good as it's 65nm counterpart and still cheaper. I think AMD have made a mistake phasing out 939. There's still so much left in that market. But technology evolves and so must we.
 
Well mine arrived today, along with a 320GB Seagate HDD. Suppose it means I'm going to have to update my BIOS (it didn't go so well last time...), and I'll probably re-install Windows so that it's on the new hard-drive.

Ah well, glad I have the 2 weeks off Uni to fix all the problems that will inevitably occur. :D

Well, if the extra cache is worth 50-150mhz......then, doesn't that make a 4400 (or 4800 for that matter) running at 2.8ghz, the equivilant of a 4600 running at 2.85-2.95ghz?

I hate to point out the obvious, but that would be slower than a 3.0ghz 4600. But if my language and logic skills have failed me entirely, please do let me know how and where.




As for you malcolm, well done and let us know your final stable overclock.
 
I would serioiusly considering running 1T with lower frequencies/different divider. 2T kills A64 performance badly. What Corsair are you using?
A64 works better with tighter timings aswell.

But absolutely try to find an overclock with 1T.

Anyone with overclocking experience will second that. Just so you know.

T2 does not Kill A64 Performance badly, you will lose some yes but badly NO.
I have 4gigs of corsair i ran TI & T2 & lost 4FPS at T2 from 150fps T1 to 146fps T2.

But If he has 2 sticks then T1 should not be a problem.

My RAM is at 3-3-3-8.
Crucial Ballistix 4400, 2 x 1GByte
Can't get it any tighter than that at these FSB's and 1T.

I've done a Prime test at 2820 for over 4 hours now, no probs.

So it's faster than an FX 60 without the extra cache, not bad on a £40 motherboard!

just saw that as well and i think its time for that last ditch attempt to keep my 939 for awhile longer :p with a 4800 while i no a lot of people will tell me to go for a c2d the thing is i just dont want to folk out for a new mobo, mem and cpu in one go while a 4800 will do me for another year with hope any way lol its got to be better than my 4000 sd chip ;)

gibbo any idea when the 4800s will ship as its got todays date down for been in stock cheers :)

That's the attitude I had - only had my motherboard (AN8-SLI Fatal1ty) since September 2005, and my RAM since September 2006; didn't really feel like selling it just yet, especially since they weren't cheap things in the first place. Going from a 3200+ to the 4600+ should be interesting.
 
Who thinks I should grab one to replace my 3700+ SD? I always thought my CPU was holding my 7800GTX back but then again my 7800GTX probably needs replacing now too. :(

Are you kidding! Yes, i'd recommend getting an X2 but the 7800GTX can stay. It still holds it's own very well. Also, how much ram do you have?

And as for timings, yes, 1T isn't possible at all, even at stock. I just get absolutely nothing, not even a beep from POST. I've got Corsair XMS3200C2PT. It's awesome memory. Some of you may know of me from another forum (AOA) as skool h8r. Also, i have got 3-3-3-10 now. I can get 3-3-3-7 but Windows is really slow at startup. Apparently the last number isn't always better just because it's lower. Now i have it at 10, it's UberFast, not NuberFast. :D All i need now is a better graphics card and some more ram.
