ok, so i'm upgrading from an amd xp 2500 (running at 3200, for what it's worth!) with 2 gigs of ddr ram and 'enough' drive space. so, it's fair to say that *any* upgrade is going to blow me away performance wise.
i'm mainly going to use this new build for vmware as a development environment (running firewalls, routers, servers and desktops) hence the huge amount of ram and seperate hard drives to increase i/o as much as possible.
the specs are effectively the same apart from cpu, motherboard and cooling. given that for ~£100 more i can get the quad, is it worthwhile? also, is there anything around the corner that i should be waiting for? £600 really is the upper limit of my budget.
i'm not against overclocking, but i will probably run everything stock for 6-12 months and then overclock for a 'free' boost. i'm mainly interested in compatibility - especially when it comes to the 8gb of ram. i'm aware that i need an 64-bit o/s to utilise the ram.

many thanks in advance.
