I found this very interesting video about the Amen Break drum loop, the sub-culture it inspired and the copyright issues surrounding it. It makes an extremely valid argument that completely demonises organisations like the RIAA, and BPI.

What do you think?

Still no comments anyone? Just got round to watching this. Nicely done even if he does have one of those voices that sounds like computer synthesised speech!

He sums it up well, as in one of his quotes about over protecting something is as bad as under protecting it. But you have to then start quantisizing how much "influence" or sonic borrowing you're allowed from a licensed piece of music. Pinching breaks okay but not vocals?

I have a family member in the Patent/Trademark business, sometimes you can use a very similar name/branding if you're not in the same business and therefore not a direct competitor. I used to think this should maybe apply to the music production industry, but it's slightly different in that you usually pinch the actual sound itself that was not made by yourself. Benefiting directly from the original time in the studio or creative insight.
