I'm off to visit some mates in Toronto in September for a fortnight and have hired a beast of a car for the duration. We want to spent anything between 4-7 days on a road trip and as it stands, we've been lacking in creativity and decided to drive to Florida and back. It seems like that will involve a lot of driving and not much entertainment.

So, where shall we go? We'll be leaving from Toronto and would like to see as many sites as possible. What direction should we take to have the best mix of fun and sight seeing? One plan was to head west towards Chicago then come back the long way by heading south for a bit. My American geography is poor to say the least so all your suggestions are welcome, maps even more so :D

So go on, spec me a road trip.

Could you not go the other direction and head north along the Canadian coast, i'm sure there'd be some amazing scenery.

I suppose I could but I've always wanted to drive through America, it probably sounds sad and I've been watching too much Easy Rider but I just think it would be a cool trip :D

I would suggest maybe driving down through Maine and New Hampshire and popping into Boston (Massachussetts) for a couple of days. The scenery you'll see on your drive down at that time of year will blow your mind, and Boston is a great city too.

Edited to add:

A few hours drive further south and you're in NYC too.

Having drove around a lot in America it's not all it's cracked up to be. Some of the scenery is just really boring while obviously there are other nice areas. If you're considering driving to Florida that might be so bad as you could pass through Virginina (I think), North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia(I think again).

North Carolina was pretty nice and they have some nice beaches along the way. You could also consider going to Lake Michigan, that would tie in with Chicago.

Random Fact

The Hudson Bay Corporation in Canada used to own 1/10 of the worlds surface. :o

Yup, the Tar Heel state (North Carolina) is OK, although I wouldn't call the Raliegh, NC area that spectacular (been out there on business several times).

Think I'd prefer the West coast states down to California over the East coast though.

Guess I got spoilt by hiking in the Smokey Mountains. :)

Must make a note of that date - two weeks without Scuzi.;)

May I suggest watching The Hitcher, before doing your tour? :D

Done a lot of roadtrips in the US. You've got plenty to do heading south from Toronto. Niagra Falls, across to Boston, down to NY and then DC. After that there's not much of interest on the way down to Florida, although you could take in "small town America" as you head down through the Carolinas and Georgia - might be a nice change of pace after all the touristy stuff :) Then there's tons to do in Florida. To be honest tho, if you're going that far south it's going to take up most of the time just driving there and back. I'd either stay in the NE corner where there's plenty to do, or just fly from Toronto down to Florida and explore that state as there's tons of cool stuff there.....besides "the mouse" and all the roller-coasters :)

TBH, there's not much of interest heading west to Chicago and back - there's a lot more heading south/east from Toronto.

You could always pop through Cleveland and have a pint with me. :D

Curio has it right, Toronto to Florida is going to be about 48 hours solid driving. If you want to stop and smell the roses (of course you do) you'll have to a lot a great deal of time to the trip.

It'll be hard but I'm sure you'll manage :p

For some reason the East coast never occured to me. I'd love to go to DC and maybe even New York for a day or two. I also want to get a taste of 'small town America', to see the place for what it is and to meet the people. I'll have a look at some routes around the NE and post them here.

Ta :)

You might have to stop before you reach Florida to do all that cool stuff, unless you can allocate an extra week or two to your trip.

DO NOT half-arse this, you will regret it.

Yeah, it's the only chance I'll get for a while so I want to plan it properly and do it right. Before I know it the week will have flown in and I'll be in the middle of nowhere :p

Florida will have to wait for another time if it's going to take almost a week of scenic routes to get there. When I get my next payrise I'll be doing a biking roadtrip over there, possibly coast to coast :D

I did a road trip around America for a month last summer and in terms of the East coast cities i would say that Boston is my fav followed by Washington (purely for the people) with NYC being a bit of a let down really.

If you want to go to places for a good time- i had the best in Chicago- that is a surprisingly nice city but the drive there would be a bit dull i think (i dont know)

other than that i dont know what to sugest in 4-7 days. When we went we did the yellowstone Glacier etc national parks which were amazing but unless your car really was a beast your not going to get that far :p

On the route 66 sugestion- lots of boring roads through prairy land tbh, plus it starts in California and ends in Chicago so isnt really the right area.

You forgot the bit where it doesn't exist any more, and all you find are references to which roads used to be numbered 66.

Of course, if you get as far as Chicago, I'm only another 725 miles from there!! :p

We could see how many soda cans you could "kill" with 100 rounds of .22 cal ammo... :)

I could kill 100 of them with 100 rounds ;)

Hope you have a great time, Scuzi, that's something I want to do someday - Fly to the east coast and drive the whole width to the west coast. Or vice versa.

K.

Well, so could I. But then again, I own the weapon and my own personal shooting range, so target practice for me could be a daily experience if I so wanted!! :p

NYC is just the same as most Western big cities in essence, get yourself out to Long Island though and there are some nice coastal spots.
