Just to note that charge cards don't give you Section 75 protection.

No travel insurance on Amex Gold either, you need the Platinum charge card for that. I think you get 'travel accident benefit' if you book the travel on the card but it's pretty meaningless and is in no way travel insurance.

Don't know what 75 protection is in the UK but AMEX in Belgium gives a 90 day purchase protection on their cards which I've used. If the store won't accept returned goods you can get full refund from AMEX if you bring/post the goods to them. Since I work next door to AMEX it's great protection for me.

Good luck finding places that accept Diners!

Places that don't accept my Amex get blacklisted and a complaint e-mail sent (unless it's like a corner shop or something). Yes I'm that anal.

Platinum is good value for money if you travel a lot.

Why should a retailer make less money on the thing they're selling you so that you can swan about in airport lounges and get points?

There's two reasons why people always ask if you take Amex.

1) They want to make sure you realise they have an Amex card and are therefore a superior human being.

2) They know loads of people don't take it and ALWAYS have another card to pay on.

Or because:

1) Their Amex gives them cash back or

2) Their Amex gives them a decent loyalty point scheme

2) They know loads of people don't take it and ALWAYS have another card to pay on.
This does not make sense as a reason "Why people ask if you take Amex"

I use my Amex corporate card for work and have a personal Amex Platinum Cashback card as well. The only 2 places I have found not to accept it are the co-op, a car dealer when I tried to pay for the deposit for my new car and a local hairdresser. Other than that, everywhere else I have tried whether it be online or on the hightstreet accepts it.

If a shop doesn't take Amex I always fall back to my Egg Money World Mastercard which costs them about 1% more than a regular Mastercard (so usually 2-2.5% in total) which is about the same as Amex charge.
