Hi,

My son has been playing Nintendo DS and 360 this past few years. The games are a quite pricey so he normally only gets new games on Birthday's and Christmas. He's now starting to enjoy sitting at the PC occasional playing flash games and Scooby Doo adventures.

I'm wondering what is the best way to play classic Amiga games these days. I don't mind paying a little for reliable software. Also I'm hoping that my Windows 360 controller will come in use.

PC is running Vista.

Your best bet would be the WinUAE emulator.

You can get lots of roms or images for that, if you want to go the whole hog, you can get GameBase Amiga for it, but there are a lot of Amiga compilation CDs you can get in shops, most of them also using WinUAE.

I've not tried a controller, but the input configurations for WinUAE should allow this, it's pretty comprehensive.

Works fine on my VISTA32.

There's also Amiga Forever. You have to pay for this one, but it's easy to setup and run (you can even launch it from the disc without installing) and gets past the legality of obtaining kickstart roms, etc.

If you are going down the route of emulators then megadrive and SNES emulators are 10x easier and quicker to use than Amiga. Don't know if those platforms interest you.

Alien Breed was good if I recall. So was anything that the Bitmap Brother churned out (Gods, Chaos Engine, Cannon Fodder, Speedball 2).

Not sure they're good for kids but I loved them!

Given that Alien Breed was so difficult it made me want to go out and hurt small animals, I'd steer clear of it for a 6 year old :D

Your never too young for some cannon fodder!!! :D
BC Kid wouldn't be too bad

But the best of all i reckon would be Nicky Boum, that was my very first amiga game and i loved it, think i was about 9 when i first played it

Get him on the quest games when he gets a few years older. Perfect way to improve your thinking and typing skills.

At the min, maybe Robocod, Zool, Soccer Kid, Sleepwalker (even though it was so annoying), Dizzy and Prince of Persia.

Yeah it's not really a case of going down the emu route. More just showing the boy the games I used to play. Not too bothered about introducing him to megadrive and snes games as I never played them myself. Not that I want to deprive him of course, but if he wants to play those consoles he can sort that himself :)
