i assume the burning smell is the end of the speakers? or is it just a warning they are being pushed to much?

That would be the voice coils getting very hot, either from clipping or over powering they might be ok if you are lucky.

basically, it sounds really harsh, the music doesnt sound as full as it did before.its a bit like standard speakers with a standard head unit but louder without the distortion. its hard to describe exactly how it sounds.

It sounds to me like something could be connected out of phase...

maybe if someone can explain what all of the nobs do and advise on how to go abot setting up i ca have a fiddle to see what i can do.
