Amsterdam a Priest and his Golliwogs

I was in Amsterdam at the beginning of the month and kept seeing this guy who looked liked priest who was always surrounded by what looked like golliwogs. Later on I saw a program presented by him and a white person painted black. I continued to see this everywhere then when walking to the tram stop i saw a priest followed by a whole entourage of people with painted black faces. I then saw it again at the airport and decided to take a photo for evidence. I asked everyone about it when I got back but no one knew anything about it. Can anyone help shed some light on these guys because they seemed pretty cool tbh.

iirc this has something to do with xmas. When i lived in germany i remember going to holland on shopping trips at xmas and seeing decorations and posters with a black dude on them exactly as you describe.

They are faded memories as i was a kid and it was 11+ years ago.

They've tried to change it in holland but their having none of it so the tradition stays! Good on em.

Dunno its not a tradition in germany iirc. but the translation would probably be schwartz peter
