An Akita - best idea ever or will it eat my child?

Pestilance: Yeah I get the whole status symbol thing. However it doesn't stop them being a terrier that gets off on tearing apart rabbits;)

So do spaniels. They're gun dogs...bred for seeking and driving out prey such as rabbits and other rodents. Hell, my Springer caught a rat not long ago and killed it in about half a second. Does that make a spaniel as bad a terrier?

If you have Kids and are concerned about any breed, and I am over any breed with a history of attacks then simply go for the one that doesn't have any such history.

A Labrador is the obvious choice for a family Dog.

I'll agree with this. Labradors are generally an easily trained and exceptionally well tempered breed.

Just to go against the grain a bit here...

Just because you don't hear on the news that labradors attack people don't assume they don't ever. It's just not reported as they aren't seen as a threat to society, our children and the safety of the planet... [/daily fail rant]

What I mean to say is dogs - any dog is capable or being aggressive if improperly handled.

As others have said, assuming the OP is getting a puppy, there is a heck of a lot of training and socialising to do in the first years of it's life (years not year - German Shepherds for example don't fully mature until they are three).

If the OP has young children and everyone will be out all day then I would suggest that isn't the ideal situation to be raising a dog in - in fact to be blunt, it would be damned unfair on the dog.

They have personalities and emotions, they will get bored, they will get lonely and they will pine when they are left alone.

If they get stressed (which leaving a new dog alone will cause) then they will start barking and howling which will drive the neighbours barmy and you may end up with problems from the council.

Don't think I am anti-dog - I think dogs are the best things on Earth, I have two German Shepherds, one from a pup, and one from a rescue. Before that I had a rescue GSD, and before that a rescue mongrel, I've been around dogs almost all my life and have seen loads of bad behaviour (rescue dogs are an emotional wreck for a long time after you first get them) and I wouldn't want it happening to the OP.

If you can't bring up a dog correctly from the off you are storing up trouble for the future and you can't do that if you are only with it - quality time wise - for three or four hours out of every twenty four. It's just not fair for the dog.

A Labrador or a Golden Retriever is probably a fairly safe bet although with any dog I'd advise having someone let them out around lunchtime even if they don't walk them properly then.

If you really want a big dog that's generally placid but a bit unsual then the Bernese Mountain Dog may suit you, obviously though the normal breed characteristics may not apply to every individual dog.

Weve just got a lab/bernese cross and hes a lovely dog daft as a brush and massive already at 6months old but very chilled and placid

We both work and the little one is in daycare during the day

Don't get a dog, they are a living being, not a toy for you to play with when you feel like it and then forget about it for the rest of the day.

here we go again...

You can, depending on the energy level of a dog, leave it alone for a working day.

I have 2 dogs, very well behaved, and they do get left for 4-9 hours at a time. They also get lots of exercise.

My advice, go to the local dogs home, have a look around and take notice of the quieter dogs, not the ones bouncing around and pick one you like :)

Personally I wouldn't trust an Akita around kids - every one I've known has had a vicious side to them, and kids don't always bring out the best in dogs!

We have an Alsatian - she's 9 and has grown up with my kids (4 and 6) and she's been an absolute joy. She's amazingly patient, very loyal and loves to play with them. She's also learnt to hustle them for food off their plates, so it's not all roses.

Golden Retrievers and Collies are both brilliant with kids - collies do tend to be a bit more excitable though. Labradors are also good, but they're really easy to overfeed.

Just remember puppies like to chew and will nibble fingers...and they have needle sharp teeth! Might be best to go for an older dog if your little one is very young.

As for the leaving them all day, I think you'd be fine with an older dog. Morning and afternoon walks, plenty of toys to play with and a comfy place to sleep. Just accept that comfy place may end up being your sofa or bed...

Have a watch of Hatchiko: A Dog's Tail.

Akito are lovely dogs but they need to be owned by people who have experience with this type of dogs.

Have you considered getting a Labrador?

This tbh.

The people who live behind my house have two dogs who get left outside on their own all day and you can hear them crying, then as soon as you look over the fence they start wagging their tale and get really excited that you've come to see them, as soon as you leave again they get upset and start wimpering. It's not fair.

Get a cat.

Must admit, I'm in a similar situation, I would absolutely love to get an Akita or a Husky (or two) but with me and the wife at work for a good 8 hours a day its just not fair on them. They're both very social kinds of dogs, and being left on their own would be close to cruelty, I think a cat may well be the best answer until you're in a position to spend more time at home with the dog.

The reason there are so many stories are because Staffies, for their muscular physique, are favoured by thugs and idiots as status symbols: EXACTLY the type of people who shouldn't be allowed to raise a human being, let alone a dog.

Raised in a proper environment, they're as loving and intelligent as any breed.

I'd agree with this, my gf's mother has a pair and they are soft and loving. Harmless and well, useless in any fight!

Like children, it's all about upbringing.

Spot on...my ex gf has a staffie and a 7 yr old girl and that dog is as good as gold with her...never ever left alone with my ex's girl and even though they are supposedly fearsome etc etc...her 7 yr old girl rugby tackles that dog but yet the staffie doesnt flinch a bit...extremely protective of my exs daughter though.

Awesome dogs and id love to have one if i could.

You sir...are an idiot ;)

Anyone with any proper input will acknowledge that Staffies are absolutely tremendous with children, particularly the bitches.

Take your dailyfail opinions/links with you.

Typical Idiot. Check the dog thread. Someones rotty got attacked by a lab!! so DONT buy a lab there nasty!!!!
Staffs are great loyal dogs. FANTASTIC with kids! mine love it when the kids come round to play. Its people like you that really annoy me!

I've had staffies in my family since before I could walk.

Think there have been about 5-6 or so over the years and not a single one of them has ever had a so much as a growl at a child. They lap up the attention children/families give them.

The dogs are bit harder work (same for most breeds) but are still manageable so long as you got the energy.

To get back on topic.

Akitas are big dogs, as said the risk could be low of them doing anything untoward but when they do you would know about it. Been inexperienced I would deal with something more manageable. perhaps an older dog that is already trained?
