An Akita - best idea ever or will it eat my child?

i dont think people know how nice staffs can be, especially with kids untill they have one... they absolutly love the attention

Indeed mate,

Excellent dogs, wouldn't ever leave a dog unsupervised with a child as a rule of thumb but I'd be extremely confident with a staffie I knew.

Funny how all the staffy links are from the Daily Mail isn't it?

I wouldn't even think about getting an Akita if I had young kids or I was going to leave it at home most of the day.

I would suggest that if the animal will be left for long periods of time then you consider having another pet.

e : Ok, thanks for the input guys. I think this confirms what I thought and it wouldn't be fair on the dog. The potential for the dog to turn nasty is also a huge concern. Maybe I should have made this a 'SPEC ME' thread.

So, spec me a great, fun dog which will be playful with young children, enjoy long, daily walks and may be useful as a deterent to burglars.

Hmm, I'm talking about a Labrador aren't I?

I would say get a Boxer, although I am biased :) They have a fantastic temperament, and are great with Children. They can be boisterous, so very young children could get knocked over, but they are just being friendly :D

I've got an Akita and a Akita/Husky and to be fair they aren't the best dog to have if you've got children, especailly if you've never owned dogs before

By nature the Akita is a very dominant dog and this is more apparent than most breeds, Also they are VERY and I mean VERY protective of their loved ones and aloof towards strangers (our pure Akita won't even acknowledge people who stop us in the street to ask about him.) They may be fine with your kids but if you've got other children round to play and they are doing a bit of rough n' tumble then it may not like it

If you are wanting a dog that is good with kids and you've got the time for a dog then get a staffie from a reputable breeder. One of the most people & children loving dogs out there and also have the tolerance to play with children

Here's my thread about our Akita and his new Akita/Huskey mate. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17835360

I'm going to add my voice to the staffie debate since I had one (well a staffie cross) and even though he was a handful to begin with (he did snap at dogs in his early life) but after a while he did mellow out and became a soppy as a box of lights and when I moved about six years ago he was fine with the local children and even in his old age he did get the upper hand against another dog that went to attack him (he did pass away a few months after that)

If memory serves the Daily mail is just (around) 60 pages of scary (you know what).
