Android - do I sit tight, or grab something current?

You can wait forever, there's always something around the corner and recently it turns out that you'll have to swap phone every 4months to stay up to date.

I just picked my HTC Desire last week, old ? Might be, but I'm more than happy with it, brilliant phone.

I hope they do release details of the WP phone at the same time as the Desire HD. Will be nice to compare them and see which one to get.

True, but there are certain times of year that it's a bit foolish not to wait a little longer. When a new phone is imminent in the next month or two then it would be a bit silly not to wait for it, especially now contracts are getting longer and longer.

If you already have a phone I'd sit tight for a couple of months to see what Android 3.0 brings to the table (if it even has anything by then!).

The Desire HD looks like a decent candidate, although if it's got the same snapdragon as the current Desire then that takes the shine off it a little.
When is Gingerbread rumoured to be arriving?

Yeah, this. That's what put me off waiting for it to arrive. The Snapdragon is the lower end of performance now with TI's OMAP, Samsung's Hummingbird and Apple's A4.

I'm 80% sure its the 1.3ghz 45nm QSD8250A
/QSD8650A (same chip) with the amd ardiano 205 gfx

Edit: in fact I'm 100% sure (for decent 720p recording)

1.3? Where has the 1.3GHz Snapdragon come from? At the moment there only seems to be a 1.2 and a 1.5GHz processor on the cards, both of which will be coming out next year according to engadget yesterday.

Apparently Android 3.0 comes out in October (and that PSP-branded phone by Sony will be among the first to have it). Whether that is to be believed I don't know.

Seems massively unlikely seeing as 2.2 is still spread far and wide between handsets. Would be great if it did, some of the features sound smart :)

I assumed that the PSP mobile would be long into next year at best, but if not, then I might just sit tight on a cheap sim only plan for a few months (at least) until it arrives. I've toyed with the idea of getting a PSP for ages, so that would be a definite winner.
I think I'll try to forget about it until I at least get my PAC code, annoying though, I've definitely got 'new gadget' syndrome, hopefully the PS Move will satisfy that for a short while!

I read that on Engadget, which is usually solid, but there hasn't been a single announcement confirming it from Sony, so it may well have been fud.

your mistaken

android 3 is set to be a complete overhaul and is supposed to eradicate the problem of different phones and different OS's. everyone should all get updates/upgrades at the same time straight from google without the need for manufacturers to mess around

that's good to hear, i did read there were minimum screen specs for it, which were larger but i will be pleased to hear that is not the case then

From what I understand, those three chips are all around the same performance cpu wise, but the snapdragon has weaker 3D performance ... which only really matters if you are into playing emulated games.

Smartphones based on Tegra2 and other dual core ARM-9 arch's are coming out later this year, which are going to be far quicker than anything currently out.

Personally I think it's all a bit overhyped, my "obsolete" Dext (running a custom 2.1 ROM) does everything I want it to reasonably quickly. I could use a bigger screen but it's not the end of the world.
I really don't see anyone being unhappy with an HTC Desire.

Depends on what you need - you could pick up a relatively pristine unlocked Hero from the bay for about £140 and get 6 - 9 months out of it whilst you see what Android can do for you. Can sell at the end of that time - difficult to see the handset being worth less than £50 - 75, so reasonable value for usage over that time period.

I have a 2 yr contract so no upgrades for me any time soon, but I would pay a small premium plus the sale of my desire to get the upgrade if it was worth it, but having seen that the HD/Ace is not much cop other than a nicer screen and a few extras, il be waiting till there is a real performance upgrade (and they sort out the crap speakers and no front mounted camera or dedicated gpu)
I recon il give the HD a wide berth and wait for the next incarnation in year or so.
