May 17th 1943. RAF No 617 squadron attacked German dams in Operation Chastise using specialised 'bouncing bombs'.

While not as successful as was hoped in the actual intended outcome (full water output had been restored by 27th June along with the electrical grid being back up to capacity), it did put a huge dent in German food production due to the loss of land and farm animals. It also proved to be a pretty good morale booster for the Allies! It also helped show the American military and Soviets that we could be a force to be reckoned with.

Peter Jackson is making a re-make of the 1954 Dam Busters film. Stephen Fry is apparently writing the script, so it should be good :)

That is the worst news I've heard in a while.

On topic, what a bloody marvellous achievement that was, makes me very proud of our country back then.

why is it bad news about stephen fry and peter jackson?

Not sure to be honest....alright, it's bad news that it's Peter Jackson, but I like Stephen Fry :)

the resivour they used to test the bombs on isnt too far from my house and they usually have a nice memorial ceremony every year down there with a fly over

As long as the lancasters don't turn into fortresses and the americans aren't in it I don't care. If they make another travesty like U571 then there will be problems.

i suspect if he is the name will be changed

I think it should be kept in, he was an important part of the dambusters history and it's not like people edit books to remove racist names. If people get offended tell them to stuff it as it's our history.

I'm wearing my grandads bomber jacket with pride today. :D
He was a spannermoneky for 617 on Lancaster G Gibson during and after Operation Chastise.

The Upkeep bomb shows what we used to be able to do. From bouncing marbles across a bath of water to a Lancaster 60ft from the ground bouncing a near enough 10 ton bomb across the surface of a lake.

And if the dog's not called ****** I will be most upset as that was the signal for the successfull rupturing of the Möhne Dam.

Well done chaps.
