I'm going hunting for Mondeo's tomorrow, and was wondering if anyone could tell me the main differences between a 1996 Mondeo (MK1) and 1997+ Mondeo (MK2) - there seem to be a few bargain 1996 GLX Mondeo's about, but I'm not sure if it's worth forking out ~£300 more on a 97/98 model.

i have a mk2, and the best thing about mk1 is scrapyards are full of them! The large local one has 1 or 2 mk2's in but at least 10 mk1's at any time, would make it very easy to get spares. (been lucky everything i have been after has been there)

ok, will take a look tomorrow - any way of checking the suspension on an mk1 (with little mechanical knowledge)?

only go for a mk1 if its very cheap, seen a near perfect one go for £325 round here. Not sure of the spec but it had aircon.

Spending £500 + you are much better getting a mk2 imho

Thanks for the advice.

I'm going to look at I've seen a MK1 Mondeo 1.8GLX, 90,000 miles, Cambelt changed in Feb '06, MOT till Feb '07, with climate control, tinted glass and sports seats - does £420 seem a fair price?

In any case, I'm not after a stunning car, just something reliable, while forking out as little as possible, which is why I'm considering a MK1.

I can tell you that it doesn't have climate control even the mk2's didn't get climate control untill V/W reg

There is a very, very, very outside chance it does have climate control. Some Mk1's, mostly those built for export to the far east, did have a crude form of climate control.

And although the Mk2 didnt get CC as standard until V reg, it was available as an option earlier than that.

I would never now buy a Mk1 if you have the cash for a Mk2. There were reliability improvements made, the interior is improved, the suspension is better, it's basically a better car in every way - the Mk2 built on the strengths of the Mk1 whilst fixing most of its foibles.
