My step-dad took delivery of his brand new company car last week. A nice new 06 plate Saab 93 1.9 TiD.

He also got a TomTom500 kit and proceeded to fit it into the car.

Now I know people say to remove the cradle when you leave the car, but who'd have thought it would matter in a 'nice' area like the one we live in and a brand new car full to the brim of security gadgets.

Anyway, I get woken up at 5am by the sound of his car alarm going off.

Jump out of bed, run to the window and can't see anything.

My step-dad comes downstairs to disarm it and can't see anything so we go back to bed.

Just about to leave for work this morning when I notice my step-dad's car is still on the driveway. I shout to him to tell him I'm going when he comes to the top of the stairs and tells me to watch the glass. :(

Turns out some little muppet has had away with his TomTom cradle

Had a quick check around my car before I got in it, and have noticed a ding in the drivers door I'm 110% wasn't there yesterday (I've been doing loads of bodywork recently so know all the defects in the body) and also the drivers door look appears to have had a screwdriver shoved down the barrel

And to think... I've left my HU front fascia on a couple of times in the past

Sorry but Manchester is hardly the place you can let your guard down with these types of things. Clearly the thief saw the TomTom cradle and thought he'd investigate further for the actual £300 piece of kit. Just a good job that it wasn't there so he thought he'd nick the £20 car mount instead.

Its a nice estate Andy, but its certainly not exactly a nice "area", must take some little scrotes about 5 mins to walk to your estate from somewhere "nasty". Heck, my mother is contemplating getting sat nav here, and I'm still making sure she gets a removable cradle.

True, but where I live, it's not your typical chavvy council estate. There is such an area about a mile down the road but I doubt it's any of them.

Probably just some scrote down the road who had his TomTom cradle nicked, heh.

Funny though... even the power cable went!

It's such a co-incidence how this happened a few hours after I called my next door neighbour a **** as well!

edit... True El, that's what I meant. But it's a good 1/2 mile to any council/roughish area. I wouldn't have thought they'd have bothered walking up all this way when they could have had something closer to home. But still, I guess they knew... nice houses + nice cars = TomTom.

You might live in a nice area, but where do you think the people from bad areas are going to want to commit Car Crime?

I always remove my GPS Cradle when I leave the car, I'll hide it and take the actual unit with me.

Yeah, like I said in my previous post, that's true and a very valid point.

Still it's a ****take though. If I ever hear my car alarm going off, I'll be out the door and in the car like a shot! I hope those ***** can run fast :D

I'm pretty annoyed that whoever did it, decided to give my car a few pokes with their screwdriver or whatever they used

Crappy state of affairs when you have to be so carefull about these things, I got very complacent recently leaving my PDA sat nav, head unit and Seiko kinetic watch in my car a lot of the time, thats not to mention the £100 to £700 pounds worth of tools I often have in the boot :o I've not had any trouble so far but I need to stop pushing my luck.

i have a PDA mount and my Road Angel Cradle and there is no way I am taking those out, just can't be arsed with the hassle.

Especially having to run the power cables to each everytime and plug the speakers into the cradle etc.

Sorry to hear about this, it seems to be getting worse and worse all the time.

I mean, we put a Transit campervan out for sale at work on Saturday and come yesterday we noticed some theiving ****** as had one of the mirror glasses. I wouldn't mind but it's only been out on show for 3 days! It's not even as if you can't walk into a breakers or even Halfords or somewhere and get one for a fiver. Now we've got replace it at our own expense.

You sure it's not a council estate?

:p If things continue, in 5 years, it might well be.

Of course, I have no idea who did it, but it wouldn't suprise me if she'd told one of her mates to "do my car over". Her mate came to the house, saw the cradle and thought I'll have that.

Someone's definitely been messing around with my car too, as there's a nice large dent on my drivers door where it looks like it's been hit with a screwdriver. Also, the drivers lock looks like it's had a screwdriver down it  *****!

What I can't understand is, how they smashed the glass, leant in and grabbed the power cable from the lighter. I'm pretty sure the doors are deadlocked, so they couldn't have reached in to check the glove compartment anyway. I must have been looking out the window about 6-7 seconds after the alarm went off, so who knows... if I'd have ran out the house I might have seen the **** legging it.

Don't be so sure mate. None of our cars are parked on the road, and it's quite a nice quiet estate. Certainly not one you'd expect to find chavs hanging around.

I cant believe you didnt inspect the car proper, you should have rang the police or atleast even give abit of a chase.

I know :( I'm gutted about that. Who knows, I could have taken part in a midnight game of tig.

Seriously though, as soon as I heard the alarm I jumped out of bed and ran to my window. My bedroom is downstairs, the window looks out onto the driveway.

My car was parked in front of the window and then my step-dad's car next to that. I could only see the passenger side, but I had a good look and couldn't see anything out of the ordinary.

I heard my step-dad on his way downstairs and so I went back to bed. God knows why he didn't go outside and check it out. I don't think he found out about it until this morning.

On a serious note, regardless of area you cant trust it to be safe. Sad thing about that though you work hard for something nice and a thief just takes it :(

That's the worst thing.

I felt proud to park my car on the driveway knowing that it was safe from harm.

Having had to park my old car on the road for a year and watch it pick up scratches and dents was heartbreaking.

Now, knowing that some retard targetted the house... I'll be worrying like crazy that they're going to come back and try again. If not at my step-dad's car then mine or my mums. :(

Could be worth putting one of those lights with movement sensors up, would be enough to put a lot of people off as they are in plain view and you would notice the light coming on. You could rig a speaker up to it aswell so that it sounds when the light goes on...though that could get annoying :D

What the hell is the point of stealing something worth £20 what muppets, they are getting more cheeky they broke into my dads van in the middle of a busy retail park at 5pm. :(

I'd imagine they stole an actual TomTom unit before hand an not had enough time to get the cradle too and found another target with the cradle?
