this is the psu I have, I want to run my 2700k and a 970gtx with it (needs a 8pin); it only comes with a pcie 6 pin cable. Well actually 2 but the other one is somewhere in my house.

Is there a way I can run the card with this psu (more like a temporary measure until I get my new system totally built and all my old programs off my current system.). I dont need it to play games on it.

I assume I cannot run the 8pin cable that runs from the psu and normally goes to the motherboard to the gpu? and use the 4pin able for the mb instead?

ATX 8pin to PCI-e wont fit. I tried by mistake one time before realising. No harm done though. If you succeeded there would be a bang & kiss your GFX card bye bye. Here's a cheap adaptor that would do the job.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £5.19 (includes shipping: £2.74)

oh thanks for this - I didnt know you could do this, save me from having to buy another psu to run this system and can reuse my current psu :)
