were else can I connect the crocodile clip to if my case is powder coated and the dumb ..... who owned the house before me decided to paint the radiator pipes?

Agree, I've never really used one. Best bet is to install the PSU inside the case and plug the PSU in via the kettle lead, obviously with the switch off (and some insulation tape over the switch if you're paranoid!). This way, the PSU is earthed via your socket outlet and the case is earthed via being in contact with the PSU. To earth yourself, you just need to touch the case.

I use one all the time. i find the best way to use it is to dis assemble a plug from the end of a lamp or something and take the ground pin out of that. you can then grip the little screw in the end of that and plug it into the the top centre socket on the wall.

easy peasy

If you're doing it on a regular basis you can buy grounding plugs for under a fiver which is both safe, and easy to use, musch safer than bodging about with mangled normal plugs (for one thing it's almost entirely plastic apart from the earth pin and the contacts for the mat/straps).

I finally got fed up of finding a radiator or a bit of bare metal on the case earlier in the year and got a plug that lets me hook both my ASD mat and straps to it :)

I did't get a chance to look earlyer just had enough time to unbox. Now I'm back home had a proper look and the thumb screw for the side panel has bare threads. I'll get the wrist strap on its own and make my own lead

I have one but have never used it. It would probably cause more damage than help as I figure I would forget I have it on and walk off or something. I'm a klutz though.

I have installed a gpu with out anti static in the past and that lasted 18 months. Don't want to take a risk as this cost a lot more then a xfx ****** special.

So I had a look at the grounding plug and noticed the ground pin is plastic it could be a conductive but if its not what is the point :s

Never bother using one personally. Built a couple of PC's now and taken many more things in and out of PCs. I tend to just install the PSU first, and plug it in without powering on. Then touch the case to ground before touching any components...
