I've been looking at a Hoya ND-400 filter, but it is a little pricey considering the limited use I'll likely give it.

It will need to be 77mm as it will spent its time strapped to my Canon EF 24-105mm F4 f/4 L IS lens, mated to a 400D.

Any recommendations gratefully received.

As far as i know there is only that, which i had hear they are going to stop making or the B+W 110 10stop screw on filter. Its quality is a tad better than the hoya's, with it being german made and all. but its not much cheaper.

Having a large thread size is just a bit unlucky in a situation like this. getting something like a Cokin P filter system and stacking a few less darker filters would not be great for IQ and would probably cost the same/more. (bad idea anyway)

All i can say that long exposures do get very addictive, but i guess it depends on how much/often you ll be using it. im really glad i bought my Hoya one. though my pentax's thread size is 52mm ;)
