Any Astronomy Experts? Shooting Star?

Hi,

I was just driving home from my friends house and seen a bright light shooting across the sky. I would have assumed it to be a shooting star except it seemed quite low and in fact in my opinion looked as if it may possibly be heading to the ground. I accept that this could however and probably was a mis-representation of it's position.

The light travelled extremely fast and smooth and did not appear to have any evident trails from what I could see. It was soon out of view blocked mainly by some trees.

Does this sound like it could be a shooting star? It was certainly travelling too fast to be described as anything else. The very sight of it sent a tingling sensation through my body for a brief moment.

I confirm I have not consumed any alcohol or taken any drugs. ;)

A shooting star isn't really a star at all. Its a Piece of Something entering the Earths Atmosphere and burning up

So yes, it was a shooting star :)

culd have been something that actually got the through the atmosphere, in which case panic coz we are all gonna DIE! nah, probaby a bit of rock or most likely shooting star

FYI, astrology is horoscopes, all they'd be able to tell you is that your aura is in the area of Uranus etc... :D

It's entirely possible it's a meteorite, it would've been so far up in the atmosphere that it literally skims off, despite it looking like it's really low - you've not got a point of reference in terms of altitude as you don't know how big it's meant to be (kind of like how the moon looks bigger when it's closer to the horizon)

How long have you been waiting to use that line? :p

Don't confuse Astronomy and Astrology. They are very seperate areas.

Astronomy is about using observation and science in order to understand the cosmos.

Astrology is a farce to make money from guilable people.

'Shooting stars' or meteors are actually pretty common. On a clear night get out of the city and just actually watch the sky for 30 minutes. You're quite likely to spot a few doing that.

What you saw was possibly a meteor making it through the astmosphere and landing somewhere.

It could have been a satellite, they're usually as you have described.

Beat me to it. The giveaway is that satelites usually get suddenly darker just before they disappear.

The description depicts a fast moving object.
I've never seen a satellite moving across a night’s sky much faster than a usual cruising aircraft. A shooting star has gone from A - B in the blink of an eye and has disappeared before you realise what it is. Quite a difference.

could have been a larger meteor, possible meteorite. Most meteors are the size of a grain of sand but larger ones can produce larger slower fireballs that dont produce a trail, i've seen a couple when i;ve been out with my telescope, even heard one once. Meteors are pretty common, you will pretty much see one if you spend a lot of time out at night.
The best time is when there is a meteor shower and you get about 1 a minute, or if you are lucky a meteor storm where it can be one a second.

could be a satelite, they are pretty commonly seen this time of year. Septemebr is about the most optimium month for shoot-star spotting as well.

no chance. ive watched loads and they definitely don't 'shoot' across the sky!

depends on the height of theor orbit, some move quite fats. A lot slower than shooting stars but if you don't know how to spot the difference they might seems similar.
