Hey ll, wondered if there were any DJ's about? I did a quick search but didn't find anything...

I did my first "gig" the other day in a small bar where i knew the manager and got in for 40 mins on an open deck night and loved it. I didn't have any of the kit of course so just did it by eye on virtual DJ (which went surprisingly well, i've now been asked to do a rather bigger event hence the upgrade).

So i've been doing a bit of research and don't want to spend a fortune on cdj's and a mixer.. I thought a simple 2 deck midi controller (with jog wheels)? So far I've looked at the "Numark Mixtrack Pro" the "Kam Digi Mini DJ Controller" the "MIXVIBES U-MIX Control 2 DJ Package" and the "Hercules DJ Control MP3 E2 MIDI Controller". All look fairly similar...

Any tips on what to get would be great! Cheers!

I have the Numark Mixtrack Pro and it's a nice piece of kit, easy to use and comes with Traktor LE although you can set it up to use Virtual DJ as well. It does feel a bit cheap however, so carting it about may not be ideal but for the money I have no complaints with it at all.

I've recently bought a mixtrack pro, using it as we speak actually. It's my first bit of equipment and I bought it second hand for just over a hundred delivered. A lot of my friends are DJs and producers and have far more advanced pieces of kit, but it suits me perfectly as I only want something to play around with in my bedroom and maybe occasionally at house parties.

I did quite a bit of research before buying it and from what I gather it's the best controller for under £200. There's tons of videos and reviews on YouTube which I found fairly helpful. I obviously can't comment on the others you've listed, I considered the Hercules as I think it's cheaper but was put off by a few of the reviews.

The jogwheels on the Mixtrack are very responsive, I'm using it with Serato DJ intro which is free, you might want to consider it as an alternative to Virtual DJ and I think it actually comes bundled with the Mixtrack now.

Like I said, I can't comment on the others but I can definitely recommend the Mixtrack. Hope that's of some use.

p.s. you might want to consider the vestax spin which is within the same price bracket.

There is a lot of kits that will link up to virtual DJ and controllers just have a look on some websites.

I used to use serato but obviously the venue would have to have 2x cd players for the time coded cds.

Myself personally just 2x good cd players and basic CD mixing :)

Pioneer CDJs, all the way. If you want vinyl, get some Technic 1210s, they are the old faithfuls of the DJ world - then get Traktor Pro or Serator timecoded vinyl.

Midi controllers are good, but you won't be respected or get very far.
