Any engineers here?

EDIT: Ok, so just looked it up and Exxon actually say between £35 and 40k which is what I was expecting. Who offers £50k? They probably pay their Geologists more too.. ;)

Sorry that was for tailisman as I said before but was on an induvidual basis (also 4 yrs ago now).

I expected most operators to be between 40-50 depending on how much they wanted you.

It all depends on who you work for, I suppose! Some are better then others. I deliberately haven't recommended the OP any Chinese or Brazilian offshore firms. Conditions there can be quite dicey, I hear (bear in mind this is based on nothing but rumour and hearsay).

Regarding the engineering question, I encourage people to sign this:

Ahh yes, some fun areas of the world!

We currently have a guy over in Malaysia. 4 man cabin, blokes smoking in it and the toilet sometimes works.

But he does get mobbed back onshore to relax and party with Exapts every 4 days or so, a nice perk.

But a crane fell off the Satellite installation whilst installing a flare stack, with 5 workers plunging into the water (2 injured fairly seriously). So said jolly job is now over, our kit is stuck onboard, the flare stack is now hanging alongside the installtion with the crane, both over an export riser AND they stored a load of baskets on the helideck so no chopper can get in! My friend is on mid 20 with MI Swaco. Wonder why he puts up with it if these other figures are available.

Apprentice, entry leve, offshore rotation, onshore?l????

Then he will have is offshore day rate on top which I'd estimate with them at around £100+.

True, just speaking about basic. Not sure what he gets when he's away from Aberdeen but don't think he's done any North Sea rig work yet.

Location and industry, some people are not cut out for working away.

If you saw his girlfriend, you'd relish the chance to work away! :o

Even though engineers are in demand, geologists are more so in the O&G industry from my experience. Heard some silly figures mentioned for senior geologist contractors.

You've also got to look at the whole benefits package when looking at salaries, the big oil majors will nearly always offer share schemes, very good pensions, gym memberships etc etc. I for one get free lunches, it may not seem like a massive deal but it all adds up.

Reservoir engineers I think are the highest in demand. We had difficulty finding ours I think.

I agree, but I was a little confused as the base salary of Geology grads and the advertised base salaries of grad engineers was a lot lower than £50k that was suggested.

Although If that was the case, find me some evidence so I can go hand it to my boss (work for a small operator here)...:p

Makes more sense (I hadn't seen your reply when I posted), it's certainly the exception IME. £32-40k is around about right for a grad Geologists and Engineers in O&G, with the operators at the upper end and services at the lower end of that. AFAIK ramping up pretty quickly for the first few years.

Anyway OP if it's all about the money O&G is the way to go, although I would never advocate doing a job just for money!

For grads?

Should have stuck with my Engineering rather than move to geology... Although I am "underpaid" at the moment so...:p

If you're a geologist get yourself working in the mining industry in Australia. Standard grad mining engineer start on £70k and it only rises from then on. Of course the cost of living is higher but most companies provide housing and cars etc free or very cheap.
