Anyone on here know if the RS1600i heads are the bigger valve heads compared to an XR2 head? I got offered an engine out of a 1600i so might buy it if the valves are bigger :) Cheers

What's this a Mk3 Escort engine? RS1600's are much more sought after than XR3i's so it might be worth eBaying it and spending the proceeds on a big-valve head.

All i can recall is that the RS1600i was 115BHP while the XR3i was 105BHP, so there must be some differences somewhere.

Great cars imo, I owned a much abused (but damn quick) example about 8 years ago, like the RS Turbo I had after it, it was stolen, never to be seen again. :(

The engine should have a "finned" motorsport cam cover and twin coils to the right of the engine , this is the non-hydraulic tappet version of the CVH engine found in XR2's & 3's.
It also has a different exhaust manifold and system, iirc and a different cam setup that would allow high revs in the GP A racing versions - The racers produced upto 160BHP, without a turbo.

As for the op's question, iirc there is no difference in head size, so it should fit. But, you may well need to transplant the ignition setup across to the XR2 also as the timing etc is different from that of "normal" CVH's.

As I say, a lot of this is "if I recall correctly" 8 years is a long time for my memory! :D I'm sure others will correct me if I'm wrong.

Ah, wasnt a question about the head fitting, just if the valves were bigger. Nevermind, i shall purchase anyways :)

Probably wasting your time and money, though I seem to remember the ports are opened up, where they match the unique inlet and exhaust manifolds, (badly). Same size valves, which in road trim reduces low end torque due to slower gas velocities..... It's all done for the Group A spec where the higher lift cam needs the better breathing.... The rules didn't allow a change in lift from the road version, only timing and over lap I believe. So the Road version had high lift and hence the solid lifters to cope.
You can't fit the distributor less ignition, unless you get the flywheel with the master tooth as well. and the CPU box from under the dash, Nor would you want to, no adjustments possible.
Best places for these parts is on the RS1600i it was assembled to !!!!
There are smarter ways to tune a CVH.......
