Hi

I have acquired a new SSD. I currently have a traditional HDD with Windows 10 installed (upgraded from Windows 8 via Windows 8.1). I want to install Windows 10 on the new SSD and boot from there. Can anybody point me in the direction of a good guide?

Do I need my original Windows 8 key?

Cheers

All you need to do is install the SSD and only the SSD, leave the HDD disconnected as windows has a habit of storing stuff on the HDD during install so to avoid this leave the HDD disconnected till windows it fully installed.

Windows 10 is activated by hardware ID so all you need to do is download the W10 creation tool which you can get from here

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

Make sure your sata ports are set to achi and not IDE\RAID, this needs doing before you install windows

you can download a ISO file to burn to dvd or create a bootable USB stick, Press the skip button when it asks for a product key and W10 will activate once online.

once everything done you can connect your HDD back up, just make sure that the SSD is the first boot device in the bios.

Sean's Windows 8 install guide can be followed as it is almost identical to the windows 10 install process. If possible, do a UEFI install.

I'd recommend downloading your Windows 10 ISO from this website as the versions it provides are much more robust for repairing installs. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO/

Be aware that windows 10 installs drivers for most of your hardware itself. Only drivers I install myself are the chipset drivers for motherboards and GPU drivers as windows often installs slightly older versions.
