Any idea why my LAN connection keeps dropping to 100mbps?

Hi.
Ive got a very annoying problem, that if i was experiancing at work, i would be telnetting onto the switch and looking at the stats to diagnose.
Unfortunatelly, my gigabit switch is a £25 netgear one, and has no such feature. :(.

So. My main PC, with a realtec gigabit NIC in it, connected by a 2m Cat 5e UTP cable, to a Netgeat 5port Gigabit switch, with 3 other connections in it, 1gbps NAS, 1gbps PS3, 100mbps ADSL WiFi router.

Every now and then, the link speed between my PC and the switch will drop to 100Mbps.
I set the device properties to force 1gbps, and for the first few mins it would connect/disconnect every 1-2 seconds. I unplugged every device apart from my PC from the switch, and plugged them all back in, one by one.
It now appears to be working.

Anyone got any idea whats going on?

Thanks in advance all. :).

Perhaps poor connectivity on one of the pins in the cable.100Mbps only requires pins 1,2,3 and 6 where as gigabit uses all of them.

is your switch happen to be the gs605.when i 1sr got mine 1 of my pc with 10m cable will only synch at 100 after juggling the cable around it would then synch to 1000mb and once in a while it will do this but was not really able to find out the exact fault as the other pc only using it for surfing anyway so not really a bother.

Tryed swapping cables around. No effect.

It is a GS605, a v2.

Touch wood, its been running at 1gbps for the last few hours fine...

If you are using vista you'll need NDIS 6.0 drivers for your ethernet adapter

I get this problem as well when it drops to 100mb for no reason with a netgear gs608v2 switch. bloody annoying
