I know theres a few of you here, im just having thoughts about my next car, as some may know i have a Focus ST3, which is simply fantastic, lovely comfortable and bloody quick-ish:p

But its a 3 door and im not too keen on the 5 door version, plus the boots tiddly, so im thinking about the Octy, it looks a bit bigger and on the practicality side it seems to fit what im looking for (ie decent boot etc)

Whilst i dont pay for my fuel, im increasingly fed of wasting my valuable time at petrol stations:p

So basically those that own them, or have owned one, what do you think? Is the quality on a par with VW? What sort of miles do you get on a full tank? Is it comfortable over long runs? one thing i like about the ST is that its not quite as harsh as the CTR,Megane,VXR etc etc im not after a track focussed (pardon the pun) car.

Anything else I should be looking at?

Whilst i don't have a VRS i have the 1.8T lump in a similar weight car, on the motorway with the cruise set to 80 I get 31mpg usually, in town / country roads i get 20 - 26mpg and if i give it some stick it goes down to 6.5 - 12mpg.

Hope that helps, no idea on the tank size on the octy but mine costs £65 to fill up with V-Power.

Nah sold that to a forum member after i took some bits off it, tis in my sig needed something bigger for the moment till i sort out some funds for a second fun car and a trailer ;)

I assume you mean the mk2

I have a mk2 octavia vrs..the 2 litre FSI turbo is a great engine..power delivery is smooth all the way..no real turbo kick at all

but petrol wise I find mine fairly reasonable for a 200 bhp car

again fuel consumption will be entirely down to the way you drive

around town you will see what you get at the moment..24-26

even if you cane it though is probably wont drop below 18

however where you will se the difference will be on the motorway...recent drive to aberdeen I got 39mpg with cruise on at 80.. I filled mine as much as it will go I did close to 400 miles on that trip on 1 tank on that trip (at 70 you can get the magic 40mpg, but you just end up playing the mpg with the trip computer!)

had mine 18 months now and its been problem free

but it is an entirely different car to the focus..I did test drive an ST2 before buying mine..it certainly doesnt feel as fast or sound as good..but its entirely solid inside, and more practical which is why I got it..I needed the boot and it was the best compromise I could find between pace and space

if they would only drop the r32 engine into an octavia estate and give it 4 wheel drive and I would buy it in a second!

Yea its not so good on the country roads but its kinda cool boating around, i like a challenge and its not so bad being the sport.

Thats a good return at 80, best i've ever done in mine was 42mpg but i've only ever got it that high once.

400miles per tank sounds about right think i get around 380ish, never really felt the need to check tbh.

At a push I get 330 on the ST, and thats mainly motorway driving.

So is the MK2 a Golf GTI in drag still? you got any pics of you interior and boot?

pic of the interior

the switch gear/control stalks are straight up VAG parts..the dual zone climate I have is identical to my mates 2006 golf gti.

from the look of my engine its a straight forward VAG 2.0t ..all my hoses are branded with the audi 4 circles..so I'm not sure why people think they are made with different parts..as far as I can tell every one of my visible engine parts are all generic VAG parts..again all visible parts are stamped made in germany and theirs a big stickers on the side of mine saying achtung something or other

I dont have a picture of the boot...but you could smuggle a family of albanians in it..I'm 5'10 and if stuff rolls up against the back seats I have to get into the boot to reach it

this next pic is only because I saw a post on here the other day saying they use cheaper parts in skodas and seats..they dont, they use VAG parts all my hoses appear to be audi parts

I can only guess that the engines are assembled in one place then shipped to be fitted in another location..either that or all the makers just get their parts from the company in general

I personally think the gti cabin is nicer..if only for the blue lights and its likely an R32 will be my next car as long as it has a ski hatch for my fishing rods! (like I said unless skoda get the V6 engine in which case I will stick with them as they have been hassle free for me)

Blimey thats a pretty big boot for a golf:p

Well its certainly a candidate, None of the other HotHatches really do anything for me in this sector, and the mondy ST is too dear for me.

At the mo, im looking at a diesel A3, or a base spec C class. The Octy offers me the sporty and sensible alternative

FTM, have you had much experience driving the MkI Octy vRS, if you don't mind my asking?

'Mechanic' where I bought mine from (MkI(dealership)) believed the MkI was better (build quality and fun'ness), though he did own a MkI!

I've not yet tried a MkII but they do look the funk. (The funk is a good thing, in my head)

330 miles out of a tank on a Focus ST? I'd say you got a lucky car there, youre not going to get THAT much more out of an Octavia vRS - certainly not enough to warrant the cost to change!

Its not a lucky car, i just drive it very slowly:p

Nah pretty much all motorway miles at 70mph with no sudden manouvres, problem is this is a car that just begs to be 'driven'.

Im not fussed about the cost as its likely to be a company car with a fuel card, im not unhappy with the focus, i just fancy a change, and im not yet ready to buy a 3 series repmobile yawnfest.Reading around you can get 400 miles in a octy/Golf GTi, thats a 100 more miles to a tank, compared to the usual 280-300 i get at the mo.

Also got a Octy vRS in Black picked it up on 01/10/07 after having the 2.0 TDi Elegance for 3 Years. Well impressed with it especially given all the free extras they were giving away, think they still are. 18" Alloys, Dual Zone Climate Control and Electric Rear Windows. I also added Xenon Headlights, Light Assist and Rain Sensing Wipers. They were also throwing in 3 Years or 30K Miles free servicing as well.

MPG getting 400 to a tank on a run, bit less round town around 320/350 depending on how I boot it.

Whats the modding potential on the 170bhp diesel?

I've not yet tried a MkII but they do look the funk. (The funk is a good thing, in my head)

I had a red mk1 for 3 years

handling in the mk2 is streets ahead of the mk1..it feels altogether more planted and sure footed

ride on the 18's is harsher than the mk1

and you dont get the real kick of the turbo like you did in the mk1

buidl quality wise the mark 2 feels nicer inside, but thats to be expected in a more modern car..but no rattles in mine and its now 2 years old (apart from a catch inside the rear seats where they pop down and its a regular fault in all the cars it seems..I just put some extra grease in the catch and that seems to stop it)

road noise is more but again that could be down to the 18's, but cruising on the motorway you eventually just forget about it...thats what you have music for!

and my mk1 was a bit lighter on the fuel..and of course the mk2 prefers 98ron fuel so its more expensive all round

although strangely it was about 80 quid cheaper to insure

I'd much rather stick with the Focus, but if you do really need the extra room then its not too much of a step in the wrong direction. Why call the 3 series a repmobile, your about to buy a taximobile :P
