I am looking to upgrade my cpu (sig) to a Q9650 or Q9550 so i just want to know if anyone is aware of any price drops by intel that might be happening soon. By soon, i mean within the next 2 months.

Best checking in members market, a few have came up for sale recently, or post a wanted thread.

It rarely happens. You might see the Q9550 drop to ~£150 but it probably won't. There won't be that many around now plus everyone gets the same idea you have now.

I was thinking of picking the Q9650 because its the fastest chip so its gonna maintain its value better than the others for selling later. Make sence or not?

Short answer to your original q is no. They may go up in price though!

Go second hand. I'd say go q9550 in reference to your statement above. They are the much more popular CPU and I think it will be easier to sell in the long run. Q6600's used to, and still do, sell like hotcakes, but people rarely search auction sites for Q6700s- a faster CPU but less desirable as it's less well known. I think the same may apply to the Q9650. Just something to think about, plus, the popularity of the Q9550 was that it can still clock stupidly high and was significantly cheaper.

Its a dead socket, however some of it's cpus still have very comparable performance to the cpus on the newer platforms. Most people will be looking for quad interim upgrades on this socket so if anything prices will go up in my opinion.

I don't think prices will go up.

I can see Q6600 @ 45 very soon in MM

i3 is beating Q6600 in many benchies

The mobos are 75 quid and i3 530 are an easy 4ghz route.

what will happen they will fall for a while then stop then start going up on certain auction sites . if its right at the top of that platform then yes prices might be silly in a yrs time but not just yet.

barton 3200s were like this for ages :D

Top end CPUs on a dead socket will sell for a fortune, just like S939. It doesnt matter if you can get cheaper new tech that is quicker, a lot of people like to keep their motherboards and just get the best CPU they can, no matter the price.
