Any tips for giving up smoking?

everytime you feel like you want to have a cig, just go for a walk because then eventually you'll associate smoking with walking. That helped with one of my friends. good luck man you can do it!

I found the hardest part was the anxiety I got when I tried to quit. I'm currently considering digging out my e-cig, as it gave the best results for me (I gave up giving up because I was having panic attacks and quitting didn't help). Start on mild cartridges and move onto non-nicotine ones after a few days. After all, it's the psychological part you're treating. I've since had therapy for my anxiety so might give it another go and post up results.

Have you tried going to a stop smoking clinic. Having to go back every fortnight for more patches made it a lot easier. They track your progress and makes the time fly quicker. I quit 4-5 years ago with no desire to even start again,
Plus, you might have better luck with the tablets.

i can vouch for this.
i gave up fags, 9 weeks ago, i had tried many times before but i always failed.
i rang my local GP's and enrolled in the no-smoking clinic.
it does help mentally.
also what i done at first was, put £5 a day into a jar. then after 6 months or so, treat yourself to a holiday or a new pc ;)

I need to stop, haven't really tried yet.
I keep drooling over new processors and graphics upgrades thinking i could spend my cig money on them instead. maybe that will be my encouragement to stop.

The drug is called zyban, but you'll still need to beat the "ciggy break" habit. You'll want to go no access/cold turkey for the first 7-10 days, so book yourself a lodge in the middle of Scotland with no shops for tens of miles or anchored sailboat in some nice location far enough from shore to beat your swimming skills. You get the picture. In general, what helps in first two weeks is obsessive/compulsive habit substitute - chain computer gaming, woodworking, country house refurb project, etc etc.

Been there, done it, tried many times then stopped when 50 a day weren't enough, with method above.

Well my personal battle with smoking has been very up & down. Before I ramble on about that i would like to say just stay focused & if you really want to quit (that is the key, you have to want to stop) then you can.

I smoked from 15 until I was 24, gave up for 6 years, stupidly started again & struggled for 8 years of going through this stupid situation of stopping for upto 8 months in the year but starting again.

I'm at 9 months this try but I feel fairly strong from temptation.

People that say "just don't put a cig in your mouth again" don't understand the battle some of us have.

Stick with it.

Matt

Gotta love the people who post in this thread who begin with "I've quit x times now, and can tell you the best way to do it is this"

...Surely if it worked, it wouldn't take x many attempts?

go to GP, ask for champix.

(although I started again through bit of a life problem champix is definitely a winner.)

You take the tablets and carry on smoking, then you smoke less, then you find yourself not smoking.
Trick is to keep taking the tablets even when you think you are over it

Like someone already mentioned, have a glass of water every time you feel like one. Pretty much replace the habit of smoking with drinking water because that's all it is, a habit.

Champix for me very soon.
One thing for the none smokers who have never tried the coffin nails its not as easy as just stopping on willpower,we have many things going on in life that add to the stress of giving up the sticks:(

I've just started reading Allen Carr's easy way to stop smoking.

He has some pretty good points in it, I really want to stop. It really isn't as easy as it seems mind.

I have been gradually cutting down instead of just stopping straight away.
It does'nt help with the sort of job I am doing though. 12 hours in a small gatehouse can start to send you insane. This is when I started to smoke more due to the boredom. I am now doing anything I can to stop me going outside for a smoke.
The thing is I hate smoking yet I still get that urge to go and light one up. Horrible habit and wish i had not started. When I am at home I don't smoke though, which is good :)

This time I will quit.

To everyone else trying to give up, I hope you get there.

My mum stopped smoking while she was pregnant with my Sister then started again 10 months later. She also stopped for 3 months after that and started again.

Is it really that hard?

Is it really that hard?

Yes it can be. Depends on how much willpower you have though. I don't have a great deal but I am trying.
Filthy habbit and can be an expensive one. Anyone thinking of doing it should think about spending their money on something else. Save it and go join a gym or something. Your body will thank you for it :)

Plus, it can be a real turn off for a lot of the ladies out there. I can see why aswell as it does make you smell horrible and can give you bad breath ect ect.
