This thread is not meant to cause offense to any deaf or hard of hearing people. but does anyone else find they cant watch any tv that has the sign language person in the bottom right corner? its so distracting

like tonight i saw queen of the damned was on so i thought oh ill watch that before bed its not bad, so i switch it on, to find a sign language person in the bottom left meaning all i find myself able to watch is him. queen of the damned has a pretty good soundtrack, which is ruined by looking at him dancing along whilst signing the lyrics.

why are they only on in the early hours of the morning as well? is it mandatory for deaf people to be nocturnal? and do you think there should be an option to disable/enable them so you only get them if you want/need them?

Can't say it bothers me. I guess if the program is interesting enough you won't notice the person anyway. :)

(Although this is exactly the type of thread sam83uk would post, you might wanna be careful of that ;))

Yeah it's very annoying, they should just use subtitles, not force the license paying viewer to have half the screen wasted, for 0.01% of the viewing population that can't be bothered to learn to read.

they are ridiculous imo, a step backwards imo. Subtitles are quite adequate and have been available for donkeys years. There is no good reason to force this rubbish on the whole nation, it really can't be hard to broadcast the signing person in a separate stream and overlay it when needed.

Yes, it's bloody ridiculous! Why they can't just use subtitles is beyond me, some Muppet jigging about like his piles are itching is nothing but irritating and distracting.

Only time I ever see that sort of thing is the Hollyoaks omnibus on Sunday mornings. After a little while I just stop noticing the person there, so it doesn't bother me too much.

I assume that deaf people might find it easier or more natural to read sign language than subtitles. Not sure why they'd do it otherwise, what with subtitles being readily available for most things anyway.

they are vampires right? then why did the main guy bite the main girl's boob and not neck when sucking her blood?
sure it's more fun but there's on artery there

lol have you ever seen subtitles to Kerrang! or similar music channels?? I feel embarrased for the whole deaf community!

My dad goes mad! i can easily watch it with a sign language guy, but my dad if its wide screen or got a signing guy in corner, he will not stop whining

Sign language doesn't really bother me, I can ignore it. What I can't ignore is subtitles, especially the scrolling news you get on News 24 and Eurosport 2. I am compelled to read any words I see, I can't help it, no matter where they are. :(

Guys guys, the reason they have sign language is that a suprising proportion of deaf people (mainly those born deaf) have a pretty poor understanding of written English. Their first language isn't English it's BSL.

Although I do agree that in this day and age you should be able to turn the sign off/on.

Things that bug me about signing-

1) You can't switch them off yet with freeview you can "press the red button" to do any number of things. Plus half the channels have a "+1" why not add a "+signing" if they have to do it.

2) The way its set up for 4:3. If you have to see Mr or Ms Signer is it too much to expect you to splash out on a widescreen TV? As it is instead of being tucked in the corner they are more central blocking more of the important bit of the screen.

3) When they pull weird faces whilst doing it. They don't all do it but the ones that do I find way more distracting.
