Anybody else thinking of skiping 680/7970 cards?

I skipped the last cycle of graphics card, and only recently upgrade to an i7 2600k in....... September I think it was.

I've just bought a 7970, only because I could get it new for the equivalent of £300.
I doubt I'll be investing again until the next "big" thing, as these minor jumps every 6 months just are not worth bothering with.

I've just bought a 3D monitor with the Nvidia vision bundle and I believe enabling 3D can half your frame rates depending on the game - so there is a third scenario in which an GPU upgrade makes sense (besides multi-screen/massive resolution). I have a 580 and will see how it performs before I consider upgrading.

I will never spend over £200 on a graphics card now for the PC

The games just don't warranty it

I can play BF3, everything on ULTRA with the max AA at 2560*1440 using a single 7850 which cost me £189.99. Imagine my surprise when I forgot to click on Asus GPUTweak to apply the OC and it still ran smooth as silk

Suppose you would need extra oomph with eyefinity though

I'm not getting a gtx680 (or any 6xx series) because cuda's been nerfed and I need cuda. Going to grab a 570 when the lesser 6xx cards come out as hopefully they'll get a bit of a price drop :)

I'm not expecting 'big kepler' to go into gaming cards to be honest, I'm expecting that to be quadro/tesla which I don't mind but I'm not after a quadro until I build a new pc :)

I picked up a 7970 to replace my GTX580 and don't regret it so far, although I wouldn't have bothered if not for the price drop.

How many frames per hour do you get?

Im using my 560ti 2gig msi card and dont have a problem with any game, dont think ill be getting a 7xxx or 680. I might look at a second 560ti to sli 560tis maybe next year if i get a new mobo and cpu depending on prices. At the minute i treated myself to a ssd which should arrive next week along with a new gaming keyboard and mouse.

I cancelled my order for a 680 after realising that for my gaming needs (wow/Diablo) my 460gtx is more then enough at 1200p + 60fps, but saying that Blizzards games are renowned for being able to run on most systems - mass market appeal an all.

But saying that even if I had to upgrade for more grunt I would most likely wait for a 660/670 or take up ATI's awesome show on the 7850, and I haven't had a ATI since the X800XT days...

Yeah but you're blatently poor given your specs in the sig. Mine are outdated and don't actually have the setup in sig and still beats yours. ;)

Nope, I've been itching to go back to Nvidia and the GTX 680 is an absolute beast. My 5850 has served me well but it's time to upgrade, I just wish ocUK could shave off a little, oh and get some in stock! :D

It's been about 3 years on my 4870x2 iirc and I've been waiting on the 680 for a few months now, I also waited for the 10% off and managed to grab one for £322 (<3 no vat and custom didn't stop it for gst). Like a bawss.
Absolutely loving the performance I get again and people able to play things on max without a worry in the world so far :D I should be so lucky if it lasts 3 years again.

Hi,

What res do you play at?

What games do you play and at what settings and FPS?

I have been thinking about buying that card and SLI'ing later.

I have a 24" monitor already the latest BenQ which is awesome. Rest of system will be bought when I finish UNI on Jun 8th.

Cheers.

I was planning on skipping this generation again but the 10% + radeon price drop made me bought a 7970 to replace a 4870. Hoping to keep the card for another 4years or so like my 4870 did

FWIW, I have just ordered a 680 as I am upgrading from a 6850 thus being a rather large upgrade.

However after looking at TONS of benchmarks if I already had a card like a 7870or higher, or 570 etc I probably wouldn't have upgraded.

Also think that the 680 is mid range Keplar (power consumption, 256bit bus etc) so if you have a high end-ish card already I would probably wait....

I don't really need the performance boost, an overclocked 480 does a great job. In fact, it's possibly the best gpu I've ever had. Though, even if I did need / want the extra grunt of a 7970 or 680, I wouldn't be able to seeing as I'd need a new cpu and mobo first. Tbh I'm already bottlenecked, though I wouldn't say significantly unless you factor in overclocking, which gives me virtually zero gains with this card and likewise the same with previous cards running in the same system. When I next do a system overhaul then a second SOC 480 to run in sli will be tempting, as long as I can find one for a fair price.
