Anybody else thinking of skiping 680/7970 cards?

I cancelled my order for a 680 after realising that for my gaming needs (wow/Diablo) my 460gtx is more then enough at 1200p + 60fps, but saying that Blizzards games are renowned for being able to run on most systems - mass market appeal an all.

But saying that even if I had to upgrade for more grunt I would most likely wait for a 660/670 or take up ATI's awesome show on the 7850, and I haven't had a ATI since the X800XT days...

I have just switched to a Samsung 3D monitor at 1920x1080 from 1680x1050
I have a GTX460 and thought my fps would get hammered but settings same (textures and effects ultra everything else high with hbao on) and stll get around 50fps.

Though 3D does make it poop itself. Trine 2 with everything maxed in 3D gets me 12-15fps but still seems to play smooth. But that's prob down to the type of game.

I feel if I had a gtx480/560ti/6850 or basically a few notches above what I have I'd be fine. But think am only just borderline and prob in need of an upgrade. I normally always go for something in the £150 range but the 7850's sound like it could be a decent boost for the £200 range. (was thinking the 7970 when they was offering the VTX at 359 but £30 more now so too expensive really)

So as it stands unless they offer 7970 closer to the £300 mark than £400 it's a choice between getting a 7850 now whilst I have a 10% off code or holding out a little longer. Just with the 7850's being so popular can't see either side rushing out anything else or dropping prices around the £200 range.
Hmmmm wait little longer or get a 7850/7870/7950/7970!??

I will never spend over £200 on a graphics card now for the PC

The games just don't warranty it

I can play BF3, everything on ULTRA with the max AA at 2560*1440 using a single 7850 which cost me £189.99. Imagine my surprise when I forgot to click on Asus GPUTweak to apply the OC and it still ran smooth as silk

Suppose you would need extra oomph with eyefinity though

You must be running low fps then because running my 7970 @ 1125 1575 i get around 25 - 28 ultra and max AA. Which imo isn't "great"

But as i picked the card up cheap im not complaining though AMD could really do with some better drivers.. just the same old story with AMD tho.. The screen flicker has to be the worse thing atm.

I will probably swap the card out for the GK110 whenever it comes out!

There's something wrong with your setup or drivers, I've never seen mine drop below 35 at 1125/1575 with Ultra preset.

an overclocked 480 does a great job. In fact, it's possibly the best gpu I've ever had.

Totally agree, I thought the 480's were supposed to run hot and loud but mine is a beast and no louder than any other card ever ever used. So impressed with the 480 I ordered a second. Should last until GK110 or beyond, there are no games that need anymore power than a GTX 480 tbh.

At the price I paid for my 480, it's easily the best GPU I have ever had aswell :D.

Looking down the road on firestorm it goes into the high 20's i7 2700k @ 5ghz, Had 12.3 and 12.4's on

The most annoying thing is that the cards been out for 4 months and still screen flicker hasn't been fixed and is worse on 12.4 betas.. cant wait for the gk110 if im honest.

Hi guys,
Really thinking of giving the 680 a miss(mainly due to price).Have always upgraded to the fastest gpu when released during the past 15 years or so but this year I really can't justify it.2012 seems really quiet on the pc gaming front compared to the last 2 years.
Only games Im really looking forward to are Project Cars and Assetto Corsa which won't be released untill early 2013.
Hopefully the ''real'' Kelper cards will be released before this time next year, saving already lol.
There seems to be an acceptance of the prices of the GTX 680 whereas people were up in arms over AMDs 7970 when released.
Anyway thanks to the sheer incompetence of the Irish Government the past 4 years my pc budget is getting smaller and smaller every year.
Really hope ''real/big'' kelper doesn't disappoint when launched.
Foe those that are currently enjoying the 680/7970's hope you having a ball.

^^ This is the real problem. No decent games have appeared which require modern GPU's or even CPU's for that matter. Sure there may be the odd game, but is that really worth spending a £400 GPU on?

NVIDIA are playing it smart by limiting stocks of the GTX680 hence why people will be paying premium prices for a couple of months yet.

I only just got another 6970 for my xfire setup and dont plan on upgrading until the ATI 8xxx series is out.

Same with me, plus with the amount of PC games which seem to be console ports puts me off splashing out on a current gen card. Diablo 3 doesnt seems to be graphics demanding either.

D3 is a blizzard game. All Blizzard games are made for mass markets.. none of their games need high end gfxs
