Is it absolutely rammed with rich kids/rahs, or is that just a common misconception?

On a scale of 1 to Jack Wills, possibly? Does everyone wear Barbour jackets and Hunter wellies?

You get a few but they tend to stick together so they are easy to avoid. One of my most hilarious moments was during freshers week where we were on a bar crawl which bumped into some people from Wills Hall (the notoriously 'rah' hall), whereas I am in UH (the cheap 'scum' halls).

A guy came up to us and said
'Oh, so what halls are you from then?'
'UH, University Hall, wha-'
'Oh, I suppose someone has to be, hah'

I have a few friends who read Mech Eng at Bristol and I know a Professor of engineering here at Oxford personally, so any questions that you have about either course then hit me with them...

Also let me know what you want to know about accommodation in Bristol.

Remember of course that at Oxford one reads engineering rather than specialising (until fairly late on). But absolutely don't underestimate how much better Oxford on the CV is than even Bristol.

Basically if you don't go to Bristol you have lost. My home town is Oxford and just, no. No no no no. The idea of studying in Oxford compared to Bristol makes me cry.

I was at Bristol and I am now at Oxford and I wouldn't ever go back. This is mainly due to the collegiate system which I am a big fan of.

There's a fairly high percentage, but there will be at any decent university.

You are talking about Bristol so you may as well talk about Bath as it's nearby and decent. I am in the process of deciding my first choice and Bristol is on the table, so I may see you there. I think it's a fairly decent Uni, I want to hear about accommodation as well as it's pretty much the deciding factor between my choices. I think Bristol is right next to Clifton which is quite an upmarket area, it's really quite a nice place tbh.

I don't see why Bath should automatically be considered, Bristol is much much better. And Clifton is part of central Bristol...

UH = poverty hall.
Oh and Wills is where the wannabe rah's go. The actual ones go to Churchill. (Nitefly went to Wills iirc)

I'm going to be applying for MechEng at uni next year. So far I got AAAD in my AS first modules, A's in maths, further maths and physics, D in chem. Do you think a university would lower the offer in some cases if I was doing further maths instead of something like geography? Most uni's don't seem to ask for further maths for mech eng but looking at Bristol they do.

Don't forget Sheffield has the tallest university building in the UK with the Arts Tower, which adds more sway to the free food.

Doing MechEng you'll probably never go in it, but still....

Get into a hall in Stokes Bishop. I'd go for Durdham over Badock/Hiatt Baker as a) Durdham is self-catered thus far cheaper and b) the quality of the halls are a lot better.

Don't go for Wills or Churchill unless you have a trustfund and a Mini to drive up the stairs.

Sheffield will be the best place to study engineering hands down, I say this from experience as Sheffield has loads of actual engineering jobs for you to do once you graduate.

(oh, and why Oxford rather than Cambridge? Eng at Cam is #1 in the UK, better on the world ranking and has some excellent staff)

Simple reason... I can only apply for Oxford or Cambridge and I think my chances at Oxford are much greater tbh... Cambridge is so hard to get in to.

Lies, I had fun in Wills, rah rah rah pip pip!

My feelings towards Wills were confirmed when a guy took his brand new Mini from mummy and daddy and drove it up / into the stone steps there in an attempt to recreate The Italian Job (in Hogwarts). A lot of his pip pip mates thought it was hilarious until he was booted out of the university.

He wasn't booted from the university. He was kicked out of Wills. He went to one of the other StokeB halls, Badock I think.

Durdham has been known as Dullham for the past 2 years at least. UH is the 'party' hall of the self catered in SB.

You had berks in all the halls in stoke bishop really and the stereotypes were at least partially true:

- university hall & Hyatt bunker: if you weren't from these halls you were considered a toff by some
- wills hall - rah rah rah!
- Churchill - I actually heard some of them chanting "eton"
- dulldum (at least 9 years) - boring manchilds
- gay dock - wheeeey for the lads!

The funniest thing I ever heard at wills was from a very pretty yet insanely nieve girl at breakfast:

"you know what's the worst thing about having a chuaffer? He always tells Daddy where I'm going "

Bwuh?!
