Anybody know he book time to change a clutch?

Aye it was sliding side to side quite a lot but did appear to spin smoothly.

All gears select very nicely now, the linkage rod bolt was loose as **** before!

I can tell you if it's the first time you've done it, as a novice and you're doing it by yourself, without removing the engine, it takes 2 weekends.

You'll need to bench press the gearbox and some strategic wood and rope to hold the gearbox in place so you have enough hands free to install the bolts!

It moved side to side in the bell housing?

That not too bright. However, if the box otherwise operates well I wouldn't concern myself too much atm the clutch/flywheel will centre it anyway. It may just be more prone to leaking box fluid and possibly spoiling the clutch plates however.

Was the release bearing replaced also?

Aye it was the alligning it back up that was tricky with us. Wriggle and push for ages then it just sort of clunked into place.

I imagine the gearbox and clutch for a mustang are quite a bit bigger than a wee almera :P

Yeah bloody huge gearbox, think they weigh in the region of 100kg, impossible to lift up, but just about bench pressable when its trying to crush you haha. Still the Yanks build them to take serious torque and horsepower stock which you gotta give the Americans they really do over engineer their engines and gearboxes most of the time. :)

Aye it rocked side to side within the bell housing which I thought was pretty bad. The box operates fine and it pulls fine so I'm not too worried about it the now.

I changed the clutch, pressure plate and the release bearing. The old clutch plate didn't seem to be contaminated but more just wear and tear. There was quite a lot of metal bits stuck to the drain plug though:eek:

Aye thats half normal depending on the age of it and how well it has been serviced, it would also be more explained by the shaft movement.

Anyway, you've still got a rattle that dissapears after depressing the clutch after that lot? Sounds like thrust washers to me. I'm not sure on your car though, as you can have them both in the box and the engine.

Can you hear where the noise comes from? Block or box?

The more impact they take the more they will wear, eventially the knocking will be constant (out of gear/un loaded) and depressing it will only quieten it down a bit and not get rid of it at all.

They can last thousands of miles worn but worst case is it wearing out if it is the crank thrust washers with them being half moon shaped they could come loose around the crankcase.

Well it's slipping again :)

Must be getting oil through the input shaft bearing and onto the clutch.

It can sit off the road for a bit now, tax is due end of next month so might well just SORN it and keep paying the insurance to get a years NCB or just cancel that too.

Well I managed to get it to my grans drive to work at it on flat ground and to be able to leave it when I wanted to.

Got a second hand box for £50, new clutch £50 and two new diff seals £13 and I'm ready to fit it all back on this sunday once I get another new seal as I humped one taking it back out :@. Here was the old box....with loads of oil everywhere.
