Anybody know how much a nail avulsion is likely to cost?

As title. I have an ingrown toenail and it's getting pretty painful now so I'm at the stage where I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get it seen to when I get back to blighty. It'll probably be a partial nail avulsion but I have no idea how much that's likely to cost.

Anybody had this done privately? Can anybody give me an idea as to how much it'll cost?

Don't bother telling me to get it done on the NHS for free - that's not an acceptable option :p

Our daughter had this done on both her big toes a few years ago, but I'm sorry that I can't remember how much it cost. I remember her toes being gucky for about a week afterwards and she couldn't get shoes on. Luckily it was summer so I cut the big toe pieces out of a cheap pair of plastic sandals.

We went to a chiropodist recommended by our GP and he was great. All done under a local and took about an hour in all.

Get alpha and grow them out!

Actually thats what i did and i wish i got them sorted properly as the pain got quite bad!
Ah the wisdom of being young, naive and broke!

The cost can depend on how bad as they may need to use pain relief which would involve an anaesthetist qualified chiropodist

It'll definitely need a local anaesthetic - they're not hacking this bugger out without it :p

Had a look on the interweb and found one up the road from where I live and they can do anaesthetic but they have no prices. Maybe drop them an e-mail see what they say.

out of interest why is the NHS so unacceptable for something so seemingly simple ?

i can see why people go private for more complicated things or for long stays but surely this is just a straight in straight out procedure with nothing really to go wrong or cause problems

i guess theres a big waiting list or something ?

anyway google seems to average it at around £200 . but maybe these googleable clinics can afford to be pricey

If you had ever been involved in surgery then you would realise that there is no such thing as "a straight in and straight out procedure".
It's not that the NHS is "unacceptable" for this kind of procedure, it reflects peoples choice based on such factors as statistical evidence of successful outcome and convenience.
It really comes down to who is actually performing the procedure.

I had hoped that a simple statement that the NHS was not an acceptable option would suffice without me having to explain myself.

It's as much to do with my situation as it is to do with preference.
Although I've lived in Newcastle for 2 1/2 years, I haven't got round to registering with an NHS GP yet. I will be moving to another area in a few months time. By the time I get registered with a GP, wait for an appointment, get referred to a Podiatrist, wait for an appointment and then wait for treatment, I'll probably be long gone, given the NHS' track record on waiting lists - even for relatively minor procedures. In addition, I would be in pain for all of the time I was waiting for the leviathan NHS to lumber through it's procedures.

Using a private practitioner, I'm likely to get the whole thing sorted in a matter of days - something I'm perfectly happy to pay a few quid for.

Why can't people just accept what you say without getting arsey about it?

I had mine done free at hospital.

Now, what you've done there is tell me something I didn't need to know. It neither answered my question, nor was it in any way amusing or informative - in other words, it is spam.

I had a total nail avulsion 2 months ago - £70 private including second checkup. I'm talking about burning the bed of my nail with acid type stuff, so I assume more expensive than partial!

Oh and yeah, I had it done 4 days after ringing up. I went private because the NHS wait was 6 months, and the NHS are the reason I had to have it in the first place (they damaged the bed when I had a partial avlusion about 10 years ago and it's never grown back correctly since).

Is this worse than an ingrown toenail?

I did mine with a Stanley knife the last time I had one or is this some kind of Uber ingrown?

That's extremely butch and alpha of you G|mp but I'd rather have mine sorted by a trained professional than start hacking at it with something from B&Q.

Wussy I know, but there are certain things I feel that just need to be done properly.

Thank you :)

I knew there must be some people on a forum with nearly 10,000 active users that had had the same treatment recently. That sounds like a good price - hopefully I can get the same sort of price locally.
