I've got myself off to a really bad start by picking up these two games. I really enjoy them both, but frankly I suck. I always think of myself as a competant gamer, maybe my previous couple of years on colsoles has tainted me!

Basically the combat in The Witcher 2 is very hard IMO. I'm still dying a lot on easy, I've got to Flotsam and I'm trying to make my way through the side quests. Any tips on combat would be appreciated as I'm finding myself being killed very quickly. I enjoy this type of game for the exploration and story, I don't mind combat being a bit tricky but repeatedly doing the same parts because I die so much is killing the game for me.

Starcraft 2 is great on SP but on MP I can't get off to a good start, by the time I'm thinking that my forces are strong enough to get out and start scouting, I have a full army on me. I've tried having an ally on the hardest difficulty (with AI) and copying what they're doing as best I can, taking notes of their build order then following it, but I still seem to be lagging way behind.

Any tips would be great as I don't want to end up limited to MMOs and FPS games again. :)

Thanks very much!

Can't help with The Witcher, but with SC2 what League are you, and what race? I've found you can get to at least Gold, if not Plat, by just nailing a single non-cheese build order.

For a start with The Witcher 2 there is a mod which gives you unlimited block which i would recommend to download, i don't understand why it wasn't like that in the first place, it makes no sense to me the way it is in the game. Combat is a bit tricky and unnecessarily hard early on imo but it does get easier later in the game once you have levelled up.

Also, there is no shame in lowering the difficulty. I played it on the easiest setting as it made much more sense( i think i upped it a notch later on though)

I am the last person who should give advice about Starcraft 2 tactics

Thanks for the tips.

I've only played one online game so far on SC2 (and lost), I've been trying matches against AI and I'm getting so badly pulverised, I'm not going to bother trying online until I can win some vs AI.

I'm already playing on easy on TW2. I'd like to play it "stock", if possible. I'd feel like I was cheating if I had to download a mod to play it. If I really am screwed, I'll consider it though so thanks for the tip. Better to do that than to give up on it (though it's not quite that bad yet...quite).

I understand what you are saying, but it is beyond ridiculous that Geralt (supposedly a great warrior) can only block once or twice and then gets tired! How on earth has he survived? What were they thinking when they designed it?

I don't know if it has been rebalanced yet, but last time i played it i just got fed up with fighting elves in T-shirts and hacking them 10 times with my sword to kill them, whilst they can swing their sword twice and kill me(in apparently the greatest armour ever)

What game are you guys playing? The combat in The Witcher 2 was ridiculously easy. Are you sure you're using the right swords? ie Silver sword for monsters and Long Sword for Humanoids. The reason they limit blocking is to try and steer you into playing strategically instead of spamming and then blocking when things go bad. Use the area you're fighting in, move them in ways which block other enemies pick them off one by one.

As for SC2 it's all about your build order, a beginners mistake it to build up an army and sit on it to long. In league games(even bronze) you will be crushed before you get the chance to make any endgame units.

Some tips:-
Know your counters - eg. Marines>Marauders. This you'll learn in time, but be sure it sticks. Also know the other races units/buildings, this can help you preempt what strategy they're going for.
Use macros - Being able to build units using bound keys whilst you're monitoring units in the field is a great skill to have.
Attack as early as you can - The earlier the better, if your first attack fails then expand.(although this tactic will win you less games the higher you get)
Get a good build order - Go into a game with a strategy and know the build order for it and be efficient at executing it. As you climb the ladders you'll need to know more of these and be adept with many build orders.
Be ready to change - If you see they're going Air Orientated, then build anti-air etc...

SC2 can is a really dynamic game and it does take time to be really good at it, there is also a lot of youtube material available for beginners.

Yeah I have no idea what they are talking about, finished Witcher 2 on hard, the only fight in the game I would consider really hard was Operator in third chapter..otherwise it is an easy game.

Just realize you have 5 spells (use them according to each situation), bombs, traps, drink correct potions, upgrade your character both item-wise and skill-wise, use correct swords, read up on your opponents in journal and skill screen.

The game is easy but you have to use tools Geralt has at his disposal, if you are playing it as a Diablo MASH MASH MASH then you will die I guess.

I didn't find the game hard at all, but i just found the way combat was handled totally immersion breaking. All the NPC's go on about what a great warrior Geralt is when he dies very easily and seems to find it difficult to kill enemies who are not wearing armour. He can only block once or twice before getting tired. Also, absolutely no one is scared of him at all, i lol'd when the guy in Flotsam came up to you and started threatening you, he was practically naked, whilst you have Raven's armour, 2 swords on your back and supposedly a massive reputation.

TBH, i think that was the biggest problem i had with the game really, Immersion was completely lost through the combat system, oh and Geralt forgot how to attack more than one enemy at once(i think they patched that after i played it though)

It is obviously just me though as everyone else seemed to love it. I'm not usually one to dislike a game so much(i'm very easily pleased when it comes to games i like) but TW2 just rubbed me up the wrong way i guess. Which was a shame as i loved the first game.

I think the big problem I have with the witcher 2 is it doesn't really have any kind of guide to what's going on. It just dumps you in game with a pat on the head and lets you do your thing.

I'll admit, I've been playing it as a hack and slash with the occasional use of the push spell (though that rarely seems to do anything), that's why I'm asking for help. :)

I don't know if you get more instructions and training in the first game, but there's nothing apart from the odd pop up that tells you what a spell does (though not what situation it's useful in).

Thanks, Zero :) I'm not overly fussed at the moment about being coached. I'm just looking for a nudge in the right direction, but I'll give you a shout if I change my mind.

TW2 was weird because the first few fights were so hard then later on the game it just got so easy due to enhanced skills and equipment. Roll around lots and use the shield spell!

The whole combat system I found pretty clunky. Which is a shame because it's one of my top games this year. The version 2 patch out soon supposedly has a better introduction and should help.

SC2 - Multiplayer is hard :) I'm still bronze league zerg but trying to play more recently. Get a solid build order and master your macro is really the way forward i think. Jump into the SC2 thread and plenty of helpful peeps there.

Try the builds from http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Main_Page

Tw2 just get upgraded quen and the games a breeze.....or wait until the 2.0 patch and the new tutorial mode if you can't figure it out....the manual is massive and goes into everything, You have read it right?

The Witcher 2 gets so much easier after the first chapter. As for Starcraft 2 mp, watch some videos - it all happens very quickly. Never found it fun tbh though.
